I think it's off topic. We're not talking about small children, and we're not talking about my children, and we're not talking about the parents of that kid. So it's not really about the topic at hand. My views re: my children aren't at issue here.

Also, if you insist on personalizing it, this thread will get shut down, so let's leave it in the abstract. "Just curious" threads have a way of becoming so much more.

Really don't want to seem like familial gang-up here, Genie.

There are lots of things I think should be protected speech or rights that I would not engage in nor would I want my children to engage in (like flag burning or massive firearm owning). Doesn't mean I don't support the rights to that in some form.

For the record: Before I dressed as a sphincter I went as Bob Marley one year to a Halloween party, fully made up and looking pretty good, I might add. Now I was really into Reggae at the time and certainly meant no offense, rather homage to one of my musical heroes.

That being said, I wore that costume to a private party where I knew my sentiments and attitude would be understood. If I had gone dressed that way to school I don't think it would have gone unpunished, regardless of intent.

Schools do have regulations that are stricter than those out in the world for various reasons. There should be no law against dressing like a Nazi for Halloween, but you shouldn't get upset when you're egged walking to and from the party either!

That was pretty much what I was looking for, answer wise. Mainly based on the fact that I think a lot of these "rights" are SO broad-based that many people use them for negative purposes, like people who abuse people publicly and then whine about their right to "free speech" when challenged about it. And I mean vicious stuff like I've seen directed at gay people, not some stupid pissing contest on a message board, although that stuff is wrong also if it hurts people. IMHO there need to be parameters put on things like that so that the original purpose for said rights is not lost or b*stardized, which I think it often is. You had the key phrase for me there.....IN SOME FORM. That's what I was asking, so thanks for your honest reply.

But how is that any different from a kid going dressed as Donovan McNabb or someone else that might be of a different race if it's obvious who you are dressed up as? That's a sad thought if that is really how life is....btu dressing up as Bob Marley is, to my mind, a little different than wearing the garb of a group/person known for its negative behavior, to put it mildly. Don't you think?

I guess that's the bottom line really.

Sent home first or asked to change.

Refusal to do so...Suspension.
