Posted: 10/18/04 - 09:57 Post subject: Shooting for another 5K PR
I think I've got at least one more 5K PR in me this year. My two local options for 5Ks are one on Nov. 6th and one on Dec. 5th.
I plan on racing every weekend in October (total of 4 races). The November race would be my 5th weekend in a row of racing. Otherwise, November only has one race so far (a 5K on Thanksgiving).
Would I be better off to race in early November because I'd be peaking and used to racing, or should I take some down time and shoot for the December race?

I'd go with whichever one you can taper for. Getting a PR on high mileage is one thing, but going for it on some energized legs will be the real rocket ride. I know youv'e got commuting and mileage goals, but if there's a way to taper that first week of Nov, that'd be my vote.

I'll echo both of the above.
First off, run the first four, and then taper that week before the fifth one.
Then, resume schedule, and taper before the December one.
One of them is bound to be a PR.

You looking to go below 18:00?
My opinion would be choose the course that affords the best oppotunity to PR, and go for it there

My previous experience of running races is that you need at least 1 5K race, exactly a week before if you would hope to PR. I have my doubts about hitting a PR in a 5K race without a month of racing, unless you're coming off a massive taper.

If your build up: Base/foundation phase, Preparation phase has been suficient, you should be running reduced mileage/more intensity now that you are in your Competition phase
I see little need for taper if you are only running over the 5km. distance.
My preferance would be for the November race, if you dip out you always have the Decemper race up your sleeve.
Most importantly, if you are going after a PB I think you choose the race with the best quality opposition

down time for a 5k pr????????????
The more I think about it....I'm going to agree with Elkid (that's assuming that all your races in October are 5k-10k)
