I agree whole-heartedly with what Flarunner said!
Now it's time for for my
1) The is no best shoe or best brand of shoe.
What's best is what works for you. I have very strong opinions when it comes to shoes. But what works for me may not work for you. In my opinion the best shoes on the market right now are made by Mizuno but that is because they work well for me and my needs, they may not work for you at all...and if you tried them and they didn't work and/or maybe contributed to an injury because they weren't right for you; you may think that they were terrible shoes! So which one of us would be right?
2) If it ain't broke
This is cliche but once again there is a bit of truth here. If the New Balance are working, you might consider supplementing by adding another pair into the lineup but why replace them? If there is something that you don't like about the 764 then by all means try some others out but if they are working I wouldn't outright replace them.
Some others you might want to look at while at the store:
Mizuno Alchemy
Mizuno Mercury
Mizuno Legend
Saucony Grid Omni
Brooks Adrenaline

Stability shoes are also slip-lasted and are either semi-curved, slightly curved or straight. The mid-sole is made up of a combination of EVA and polyurethane or all polyurethane. And again, there is absolutely nothing in the shoe to correct for over-pronation.

Thanks very much! I appreciate the input. I agree with everything you've said (including the part about going to the overpriced store....I think you're right! Sorry RRS...)
This is kind of what I was looking for. After many years of various types, brands and sizes of shoes, I've definitely learned there is no right shoe for everyone, or even one consistently right shoe or brand or size for me. I really just was curious as to how the mechanics of my foot play into the different types of shoes out there, ie, motion control, etc and how that then plays into Asics.
My next question: what is the purpose of a stability shoe?
Second, While I over-pronate somewhat, I think my bigger problem right now is arch support...input? My 764s are okay at best. They work now, but thats with the arch support and I don't like the extra arch support that I've put in them (again, I agree with you on not putting extra stuff in them, thus I'm looking for a shoe that may work for me without the extras). Knowing all the nitty gritty about my foot, do you have any type of shoe I should lean towards, motion control, etc? I'm afraid that they will look at my current motion control shoes and say they are wearing normally. The last time I went to a running store (in my 763s) they said this and I ended up with cushioned shoes that did NOT work.
Thanks so much everyone for your input!!!

Usually stability shoes are for people who pronate slightly and for people who like a little bit of a firmer feel to their shoe.
Take me for example (please!). I'm an under-pronator (way under), and I like a soft, cushiony shoe. So I wear shoes that are curved with EVA in the midsole and lots of cushion in the heel and forefoot. When I have tried shoes with polyurethane in the heel part, it feels too stiff and heavy.
Now someone who's heavier or who likes that firmer feel will like your typical stability shoe.

Without watching you walk and run, it would be difficult to suggest a certain shoe. Sure, I could list a bunch of stability shoes and a bunch of motion control shoes, but that really isn't what you asked.
The best bet is to go to a reputable running speciality store and work with a knowledgeable sales person. And of course, try those shoes on and wear them. Doesn't mean you have to buy them at the over-priced store (and I had plenty of people do that to me), but trying them on will give you a much better "feel" for what your foot wants and needs.
There were times when I suggested a major stability shoe for someone and they said they felt better in a less than stable shoe. They looked horrible in the shoe, but they liked it. A few of those people brought the comfy shoe back and got the stability shoe. A few others kept on with the comfy shoe and had no problems.
Oh, and don't be afraid to tell the knowledgeable sales person that the shoe you're in, while it looks good on your foot, just isn't getting the job done. You have to put stuff in it, etc., so what else can you try out?

That makes sense--thank you again for your help!
I hope to go Saturday to the overpriced but helpful store to figure all this out. I'll keep you posted!

Just wore out a pair of 2070s, and got a gorgeous (purple & blue, my favorite) pair of Preleus, they're very cushiony and I like them a lot so far.

And the winner is: Saucony Grid Omni! Good call, Mega! The overpriced but very helpful shoe store guy thinks I need a stability shoe based on my foot, shoe wear, my walk, etc. The saucony was the one felt the best while supporting me the best. (I liked the feel of the NB 854 but it didn't offer the right support in the right places....)
Tomorrow is their trial run....
Thanks for all the help!

I know I'm in the minority here but it's Nikes for me. I've done New Balance, Brooks, Asics, Addidas and it's always back to the Nikes. The shoes I hated the most were the Asics GT2070's. I had heard so much positive about Asics I bought a pair. Hated 'em from day one, seemed like a harsh landing with them and I had way too many problems with my calf muscles. I wore 'em thru about 600 miles because I kept thinking it was me and not the shoes. Went back to the Nikes, problems solved, I'll stick with 'em.

Yes! Just got a pair of Asics Gels for Xmas. Still have a few miles to go on my Sauconies, but afterward Asics will be my shoes!

The birthday fairy brought me some new Nikes! Yippee! And since the birthday fairy (a different one) also brought me some money, Mama gonna get some more Nikes as soon as the stores have 'em!
Aahh! The smell of new running shoes...

I started ot with New Balance and really loved them but the soles wore out too quickly. That motivated me to switch to Asics. I use two pairs of running shoes, alternating every other day. While one pair are Asics, the other pair are Mizuno which I really like.
