Any Asics lovers out there? My aunt swears by them and we have similar feet. I'm thinking that for my next pair I might <gasp> switch away from my beloved New Balance. I know that ultimately its a personal thing, but she made the switch ~5 years ago and hasn't been back.

See what you think. I over pronate, I walk like a duck (ie, my toes pointed out) and I have high arches that collapse when I step. Currently I'm wearing NB 764 but supplemented with arch supports. Any thoughts? Asics 2080? Foundation? Kayano? Koji? I'm really confused at "stability" vs. "motion control" and the fact that my arch is high but collapses....

Also, I'm doing this because if possible I'd like to get an idea, then buy them through RRS, rather than my very helpful (but shamefully overpriced) local store.

Opinions?

Cheryl, I think my feet have been cloned and given to you. Wink I wear Asics and I have almost the same feet you described. I wear the GT-2070's. But I had strayed this summer and payed the price. I also just got orthodics this fall and they have helped immensley. I am going to the podiatrist in a couple of weeks for a check and will then decide if I should stay with the GT-20 series or move into a little more of a cushioning shoe.

Also, I would check out National Running Center for shoes and running apparell. They are comparibly price to RRS but the service is great and the shipping is reasonable.

Good Luck

Not really anymore. They lost me with the 2070. I took them back to the store as they were the most uncomfortable shoe I had worn - they pinched and dug in over the top of the toes, rubbing them raw cry . In exchange I took a Kayano as I had had a pair of them before, but after the first run I recognised the beginning signs of plantar fasciitis . Thinking I had just chosen unwisely, I was too embarrassed to take another pair back to the store, so I figured I'd keep them for work shoes and went to a specialist running store for the next purchase. After analysing my gait on video, they suggested the Kayano or the Brooks Adrenaline - so I went for the Brooks and have been really pleased with them. While I was there they looked at my Kayanos and said that they were faulty - way too much flex in the sole. So even though I had purchased them elsewhere, they replaced them on the spot with the new model Kayano and sent my faulty ones back to Asics. Top service from the running store thumbs up .

I now alternate between the Kayano and the Brooks, but I think my preference is still for the Brooks. I also pronate heavily and so use an customised orthotic . They aren't quite perfect, but probably as close as I can get, and so long as I watch my form while I'm running, I don't generally have the usual over pronators problems with the PF or ITBS.

Cheryl you seem reluctant to switch. Can I ask you a question, if the New Balance are working for you why switch?? Are you changing just for the sake of change?? Just adding my 2 cents.

I'm not reluctant to switch really, I just never looked at other running shoes until the last few pairs of my NB are just okay, not great. And the fact that I had knee problems until I added the arch supports in my current pair make me think there is a better pair of shoes (sans extra stuff) out there for me. And while my current pair with arch supports are doing okay, they fit sort of odd, like my foot feels like its too far out of the shoe. Anyway, its time for a new pair and I thought I'd try to get a pair that works a little better for me this time. My aunt, having similar feet, suggested Asics (but she wears a discontinued men's model, so that didn't help) and me being confused about stability vs. motion control just wanted to post this here to see if anyone can clarify. Thanks for the 2 cents!

Cheryl,
[two dollars]

Cushioned shoes are slip-lasted shoes that are either semi-curved or slightly curved. When you look at the bottom of the shoe it looks like an elongated C. The mid-sole is made either of EVA (ethelyne vinyl acetate) or a combination of polyurethane and EVA. There is absolutely nothing in the shoe to correct for over-pronation.
Stability shoes are also slip-lasted and are either semi-curved, slightly curved or straight. The mid-sole is made up of a combination of EVA and polyurethane or all polyurethane. And again, there is absolutely nothing in the shoe to correct for over-pronation.
Motion-control shoes are either board lasted (very rare any more) or a combination of board and slip-lasted. They are a straight shoe. Look at the bottom and it looks like an I. The mid-sole is made up of EVA, combination EVA/polyurethane or all polyurethane, depending on the manufacturer.
On the medial side of the midsole of a stability shoe, you will see the stability device. In some shoes (Asics) it is dual-density EVA, where the medial side EVA is much firmer than the lateral side. In other shoes, it will be some kind of plastic device, which again, adds firmness to the medial side of the shoe. All of which helps the over-pronator to stay in a more neutral mode during foot plant.
Your level of over-pronation, determines which stability shoe to get. The longer (from the heel towards the toes) the dual-density EVA, the more control. And the same with the plastic device. The bigger it is, the more control.

With all of that said:
1. Get a shoe that feels good on your foot. If it doesn't feel good after wearing it around the house for a couple of hours, it ain't gonna feel good in the middle of a run.
2. Get a shoe that helps keep you in as neutral a position as possible without adding a bunch of stuff to it. If you need to get custom orthotics for whatever reason, please do so. But I'm talking about the over-the-counter arch supports, cushioned stuff, etc.
3. When you find a shoe that works, stay with it. You know, if it ain't broke...
4. Get a shoe that fits your foot properly, not a size X because that's what you've always worn. You should have about a thumbnail's length between the end of the shoe and your longest toe. (Although personal preference may vary. And this is where the wearing them around the house comes in.) Also, you should have enough room width-wise for your toes to have some wiggle room.
5. Get a shoe that YOU like and that works for YOU, not something that someone says works for them. Go to the over-priced running speciality store (a place where I worked for 5 years) and try on about 4 different types/brands of shoes. Run up and down the sidewalk in them, walk around the store in them. And do this later in the day after you've been on your feet for a while. Even though you and your aunt have "the same type of feet", you don't have the SAME feet.
