Posted: 02/17/04 - 10:31 Post subject: Shoe Review - Asics Gel-Kayano version 10
I know, I know - the Kayano is the top of the line price-wise. But as the shoes are the one item of gear with the biggest impact on running (unless you're inclined to run in a strait-jacket), the money you put in is your biggest investment.
Version 10 of the Kayano is, on paper, tailor-made for a runner like myself - a heel-striker, with low arches and a moderate overpronator. Motion control is the issue here. In these issues, the early running seems to address the above items in the affirmative. This is a firm shoe, and I immediately noticed it was enough to lessen the heel strike, and ensuing slap of the sole of the foot (due to my low arches) on the ground. It supposedly is well-cushioned, but I didn't notice - that's something I don't generally notice.
I noticed, but not as much as the heel-strike, that there was less of a roll to my feet with the Kayano. As my biggest fear running is that I'd roll over on my ankle, this is as much a psychological boost as it is physical.
For some reason, the toe section is more open, wider for my foot (I'd recently had a nice case of black nail and did give this a lot of attention when I went shoe-looking). It seems much more flexible than my previous Asics (Preleus), and while it will never be as light as I could ask for, it still gets the job done.
Of course, all well and good. But then there's the price again. It is a lot, no kidding. Mine was a matter of elimination, coming down to these or the Mizuno Alchemy. In the end I went with the Kayano because the shoes can make a difference - if they are going to prevent injuries and problems, in the long run (no pun intended), combined with training, the shoes you choose can improve your running. To me, that choice was the Kayano.

Some minor changes in the upper ("Biomorphic fit" panels to reduce binding across the foot) and midsole (gel added for cushioning, along the flex groove). The feel is the same - and if need be, they have added some wider sizes. If you liked the IXs, you'll definitely like the 10s.
