My friends and I have always been in favor of Shimano gear. I heard that Shimano has started to produce carbon cranksets. I find that hard to believe since the company was known for producing aluminum sets. Very good sets, I must say. Is it true? Or is this another rumor that lacks serious foundation?

Yes, you have heard correctly. Markus Fothen and members of the Gerolsteiner squad have been testing pre-production carbon Shimano Dura Ace cranks on their Tarmac SLs. While Campagnolo and SRAM have been using carbon on their group sets, Shimano stuck with the aluminum (that doesnt include their wheel sets). Recently, riders could be seen testinging out Shimano carbon cranks at the Tour start in London. Obviously, the people from Shimano have decided that carbon is a good choice since it appeared on the XTR off-road group. Careful observer was able to see the prototype cranks at other races during the year and the Gerolsteiner squad obviously trust them enough since they are willing to use them on the Tour.
