(it's a long one!)

First off, flash back to last years Kettle Run. Probably the WORSTEST race I've ever ran. I wasn't ready for the hills, and I sputtered in at 43:20. I REALLY wanted to do good this time around because this run still bothered me. Neutral

Ok now, to yesterdays race!

Got there early so I decided to drive the course. Counted the hills, set up trip wires and found my sign (a 'highway S' sign that noted the final 1/2 mile of the run)...strategory at it's finest.. Wink

Found my CREW--> c-jay, shelee, sue, randy and ben. Chatted a bit and lined up! Here were my goals for this one A) Maintain an even pace B) Stay within the 7:30-8:00 mark C) Try to place.

The gun goes off and I start to run. First mile goes by quickly...clocked in at 7:22. I knew that was just a bit too fast so I slowed down a bit in preperation for the 6 hills between miles 2 and 4. Clocked in at 15:02 for mile 2 and 22:40 for mile 3. It was an out and back so at the 2 1/2 mile marker, when I saw just 7 people in front of me, I knew I A) had a chance to PR and B) had a chance to place. (mentally, this killed all the little naggin doubts in my mind...you know those ones we have during races, yes?) Also I had the extreme pleasure of 'high-fiving' shelee and rando as we passed!

There were two guys in front of me that I could still reel in. Got the first guy pretty easily but the second guy was waaay up there. Thanks to my training, I aggressively hit the hills and made up the distance there. Caught the second guy at mile 4 (clocked in at 30:01), punched him in the kidneys, helped him back up and the left him. The. final. mile. There was absolutely no one ahead of me so my 'reeling' was over. The Highway S sign was in the distance and when I hit it, I kicked it into gear. Finished really strong at the finish line (it's an uphill finish line Evil or Very Mad ) with the time of 37:05!! Mr. Green

Average Pace = 7:25
Very Happy New PR (previous was 38:12) Very Happy
Took home the 'gold' for my age group (20-29)
5th place overall

I was really proud of myself and it feels AMAZING to see all the training come to fruition. Needless to say, I was floating around the rest of the day!! fubby It was great to see the Mafia once again, you all rocked my faces off! (look for pics in about a week...i'm not digitalized yet.)

Woo hoo!

joel

ps. thanks for reading!

Joel was simply amazing. We slapped hands at about the 2.75 mile mark, and he looked as calm and comfortable as me on the couch! Joel, you are an inspiration to what great training can do. Keep it up, my man!
