Libby has always been a good student, with mostly A's, a B or two, and once she got a C. This first report card of her 6th grade year though, she pulled off a 4.0. Part of me thinks that it's this backward state (they seem behind in some areas) but I'm just gonna be proud anyway. Told her I'd get her a present today (I've always said I would for this type of report card) and we made the deal that if she does it all year, she will get a pet. A cat, to be specific.
Will's report card was very good too, graded on about 20 areas (using 1, 2, & 3 -- 3 being excellent) and had a 1 and 2 but the rest were 3's... he needs to work on verbal reading and comprehension, but I knew these things already and we've been working on those areas.
I'm a happy mom today.

Wow!
Whatcha getting her? You're getting the cat at the end of the year, yes?
That's great! I loved teaching 6th grade. I bet she would have been wonderful to have in class. You have every reason to be proud. These next few years will be a challenge to stay organized and keep up with the increased demands of schoolwork.

Thanks everyone!
I think the kids get their smarts from their father, since he is SOSOSOSO smart. However, they do get their motivation to do well from me. I'm a big college pusher, and emphasize that unless they want to have student loans (I've explained that they do not) they need to get good grades so that they can get scholarships. I'm also big into telling them that they're not average kids, that they can get good grades if they just try, and that if I can be a 4.0 student with being a mom/wife/handywoman/etc, they can certainly pull it off with their relatively small responsibilities. Seems like they may be listening to me after all.

Hey, it is a good thing you live in this State, otherwise those would be fighting words.

I was mainly referring to academic standards, compared to our native Indiana. I didn't even mention the fact that NC natives are a bunch of hilljacks.

You are an awesome mommy. And kudos to the kids with their "can do" attitudes, which, of course, you have gifted them with.
