From what I hear, they've been banned from the local schools for some time. I remember wearing these as "Madonna bracelets" back in the early 80s. Funny how when some things get recycled, they also get an entirely different meaning.

o.m.g. I hadn't heard about this.

My 5th grader has been wearing a slew of ponytail holders as bracelets over the past month. I asked if she knew they come in plastic/rubber. I had planned on putting some in her stocking.

I guess I should ask her more about them.

‘SECRET MEANING’
Elizabeth Cooke, a fourth-grade teacher in Baltimore County, says she was surprised when a fifth-grader told her the bracelets had “secret meanings — one being, if someone broke one it meant you have to have sex.”
“He told me that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to wear them anymore because they were stupid,” says Cooke, whose school allows the bracelets as a fashion item, if they cause no distractions.
“In my opinion,” she adds, “he shouldn’t even be thinking about sex at all.”

In my opinion the boy shouldn't be wearing Jelly/Madonna bracelets in any case......

True dat. Maybe he's, um, "non-traditional"? Even then, he wouldn't be interested in the connotations? (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

If they are close enough to break a bracelet, they are already half way to home plate.

Then again, all our "boys" dye their hair, have many piercings, paint their nails etc...(not as many of those).

Don't get me started on students and sex...I'd crash the forum.

Ian is nine.

Ian has a unique hair do
Ian has two ear piercings
Ian paints his nails all the time
Ian said the other night, when I couldn't reach his father "Maybe they're upstairs doing something....if you know what I mean.... naughty"

Fifth grade is when you start knowing it all. Thirty is when you start realizing it ain't what you thought it was in the 5th grade.
