Believe it!
I've taught sixth graders who carried Beanie Babies around all day...and sixth graders who needed to take pregnancy tests. Not.Fun
It's amazing what kids have to face these days.
I didn't even know what was when I was their age!
I didn't know kids were having it until much later than that.
Call me naive.

gr.7 is the youngest i know anyone... i remeber an older girl being pregnant at junior high, she would've been in gr. 8.
by gr.9 it was common, by gr.11 almost everyone i knew had had it.
a virgin at 18 was very uncommon.

I remember an occasional 8th or 9th grader pregnant, but i guess i didn't know who all was and was not having sex.

Disagree. You cannot begin talking to kids about sex and drugs and all the other important things when the things become relevant in their lives, because then it may be too late to have an influence on them. If you think that they're not talking about these things with their peers, you're wrong. Mom and/or Dad need to start talking about these things early and tell them the truth of the matter.
Libby has known how babies were made since she was 5. She's known about AIDS and STD's since I cannot even recall, but it's been years. She probably knows more birth control methods than the average teen, and how they work. As soon as Will asks me where babies come from, he'll know this stuff too, same deal with Jake.
I really believe that if more parents got over their own issues with sex and talked to their children, unplanned pregnancies and std's could be lessened.
Knowledge is power, regardless your age.

Colin and I had a lot of these talks early, because there are so many weirdos out there. I still tell him when he goes to the bathroom in a public place that if anyone tries to touch him, scream like a girl and get the h3ll out of there.
I think our kids are growing up in a different world, and there are things they need to know.

What I meant is it's hard for me to believe that kids at that age know about this stuff now. Maybe I was clueless and didn't know or just didn't want to when I was that young. I totally believe parents should start talking to kids at a young age about all the stuff that is out there now. When I have kids I will do the same. It's a different world they are growing up in now.

I think the "birds and the bees" talk is very different than what students know, or think they know about sex. I agree wholeheartedly that knowledge is power, but misinformation, peer pressure, and hormones are far, far more powerful. That's the reason kids drink, smoke, have sex, and all the other stupid things they know is bad for them.

Perhaps I should have elaborated on what *I* do and have done. I was asked what a bl*w j*b was, and I was honest about it, blushing though I may have been (by the then 10-yo daughter). I had to explain "j*rking *ff" too as Will decided once to call his sister a J.O. I don't think I'm the average parent, and perhaps that is what you are used to. I may be raising typical children, but I myself am not a typical parent. I just answer questions honestly and take advantage of those teachable moments.

Brie...don't take things so personally. I didn't comment on anything you did, or intend to insinuate I thought you were doing the wrong thing. I just used your post to since it triggered additional thoughts on the subject. I'm sure you are an above average parent with above average children. I've never met a parent who believes otherwise, and I wouldn't want them to think any other way.

Not trying to take it personally, but you did quote me, so I felt I should explain that for us it's not just about "the talk". A lot of parents don't have the talk, or don't go beyond the very basics. That's not me, and that's what I was clarifying. No harm, no foul.
I don't know, I feel I'm very average parent-wise in many areas, but different than the average parent in other ways. Sometimes it's for the better, other times I'm not so sure. I just muddle through and hope for the best. As far as the kids go, they are the same. Above the average in some areas, and just average in others (attitude and cleanliness come to mind! LOL!!)
I'm sure you've had things said or written hit you the wrong way, and I think that happened with me yesterday. I think I'm insecure about my parenting.
