Ok. When doing laundry, whose repsonsibility is it to ensure there is nothing left in the pockets? The person to whom the clothes belong, and who therefore (in my opinion) has repsonsibility for both the clothes AND the object, or the person putting the laundry in the wash?
I washed and dried someone else's clothes with a pen in the pocket. The dryer and the clothes in it are covered in ink. Any helpful Heloise like hints are also welcomed.
Although I still say take the pens out of the pockets yourself when you take the clothes off your body! What say you people??
(I put this in the clubhouse as well but I'd like as many opinions as possible). I'd also like to add this; he walks through a restaurant dining room picking up junk off of the floor (at work) and putting it in his pockets temporarily and while he usually empties them there is still leftover crap and I am NOT touching that. God knows what's been in contact with stuff on the floor via shoes, etc. You get my point.
Thank you in advance for your opinions.

In our house, I do most of the laundry, and I do not check the pockets prior to clothes entering the machine. We try and check our pockets we throw our clothes in the basket.
Ulimately, I think one should empty there pockets prior to putting the clothes in the basket (or floor)

i think the wearer should empty his/her pockets before tossing the dirty stuff in the basket.
i have washed countless glucose tablets. they just dissolve in the wash and i'm left with the little wrapper (he's only 15 though) i'm still training this one.
not your fault about the ink and i bet this is the turning point. no more stuff will be left in pockets.
sorry, no clue how to get ink out -- try soaking and soaking and soaking for days in regular detergent like Tide. i've gotten some real tuff ones out just by soaking.

Thank you so much. We are talking about an adult here, not a child or teenager. If I wanted to clean up after people I would do laundry for a daycare service or something.
(Pardon my rant, but I am pissed off. Since when is it my responsibility to clean up after you and dig through your dirty clothes?)
For god's sake, it's not all that difficult to remove items from your clothes when getting undressed. That's the way I was raised.

it is up to the wearer to empty the pockets.
that said, I lost a lot of clothes to grease when my daughter was younger. she would "forget" to take her fancy lip gloss chapstick kind of things out of her pockets. it would make it through the wash, but then the dryer would melt those things all over the clothes. for some reason it always got my dress shirts.

For sure, it's the wearer's responsibility. But as it happens, all the people we love are flawed, darn it. I've picked more tissue remnant off my clothing than I'd have liked.
Now, about getting it off the clothes et al: my stepmother, aka the Anti-Dirt, once told me about a product that has done more to remove stains than anything else I know. I can't remember if it does ballpoint pen, but I know it's good for crayons, which was my issue at the time. It's called Goo Gone, and you can get it anywhere. You might also try a long soak in Oxyclean if GG doesn't work out.
In any case, IMO, the wearer owes you a few beers out for trying to fix his mess.

Who wears a pen in their pocket?
I would expect such from Rolling Rock's husband, but not a restaurant manager.
Oh yeah, it's the wearer's responsibility. I only put large important objects in my pockets (keys, cell phone, wallet) so I'm sure to empty my pockets every time.

Hairspray gets out ink. Use an old toothbrush and go at it, should come out.
I'll chime in with everyone else. You forget something in a pocket as it goes in the laundry basket..your own fault. That being said, when I do laundry, I do check pockets...mostly 'cuz I wash kids clothes with mine and I can't say how many times a chapstick, marker, crayon, or other highly colored items disastered a load.

Wearer's responsibility, no question.
As my wife does the laundry, however, she has decreed that anything of value not removed becomes hers as payment for all of the other junk she has to clean out pockets....
She made about $100 last year I think.

many shirts have been "pooped" on by arrogant pens in the pocket.
that's cuz he stopped wearing that nerdy pocket protector. ( which i liked)

- wearer's responsibility; you leave it, it's mine.
The Paramedic despite frequent reminders that he calls "nagging" routinely leaves pens, Listerine pocket paks, gun, tourniquet strips, medical gloves, and syringes in his pockets.
That said, if you've washed the ink you may be able to get it out, but once you've dried the ink unless you bleach it you're SOL.

He just leaves a pen in his shirt pocket sans protector, apparently. It was definitely one of his pens and not mine (we're both pen picky). I'll haveto try the goo - gone; I'm more concerned about the dryer. I've been trying this big wet towel through dryer method and while some of the stuff is coming off of the dryer walls there is plenty of black ink left.
I think I'll let him try the hairspray on dryer bit. I'm trying to heal a corneal ulcer and somehow I think that sticking your face in an enclosed tiny area with hairspray - Yech!! is not the best idea to expedite this process.
I've never been "burned" on this issue as I always take my stuff out of pockets and everyone else whose laundry I've done has as well.
Thanks for your input, though!!!

DO NOT DO THAT!!! Hairspray is flammable. Even once the residue "dries", the heat of the dryer will melt it and make it ignite. Just run a lot of black clothes through it to get the black out.
I would suggest you tell SO to buy you a beermeister for emotional damages.
