Posted: 06/11/05 - 08:30 Post subject: Service in your family?
I was thinking of this the other day. The wife and I were talking about our kids, and possibly where they would go to college someday...and I wanted one to go to North Carolina (just so I could come and visit) and I also mentioned that it would be cool if one of them got into one of the acadamies...Army, Navy, Air Force...doesn't matter.
The wife said...no way, our kids aren't joining the military. I'm like It would be a tremendous honor in my opinion.
No one in her family has served. No One. I was in the Guards, my Dad was in the Guards, my bro is still in the Guards. My cousin was a Marine, my Grandfather's brother died in WW II. A cousin on the other side and his wife were in the Army.
How about you? We know aire has some good history here, and of course, robp's son is serving proudly. Anyone else?

I never served. I was eligible for the draft lottery, but the two years I was, my birthdate came up way low each time.
My grandfather on my mother's side (I think) served in the army in World War I. My dad was in the Air Force in the late forties (post WWII). I had an uncle in the Navy in the sixities. That's about all I know.

Interesting you should ask cuz I'm gonna talk to my Dad today about this very thing. My Grandpa and his twin brother were 2 of a handful who survived outta their group(for lack of the correct term) on D Day. I find that to be extremely odd and lucky. Grandpa never ever talked about it but I thought Dad may know a bit more.

I completely forgot about my uncle Gene, who served in the Navy.
Uncle Gene passed away about 12 years ago from Lou Gherig's. That was very sad. But he also served.

My brother served one tour in the AF, my bil is currently Air Nat'l Guard.
My husband's grandfather was in WW2 in Belgium and another uncle was in a couple of tours. One uncle retired as a Naval Chief.
But other than Mr Aire and the Naval Chief, those are the only two "career men" in the fam.
I would have/still would serve if I could.

I really considered Navy or Air Force. In the AF, I was going to try and be a cargo pilot. Everybody dreams of being a fighter pilot. I just wanted to fly cargo.
My uncle served in Vietnam. To this day, he can't talk about it. Too tramatic.
My cousin served in the AF. I think he was between the two Gulf wars.
My ex-gf's dad is reserve duty army??? He just got back from Afganistan.
A friend from Purdue just got back from Iraq. She's a x-ray tech with the army. There are rumors she's going back in November.

My dad was career Navy.
I didn't join the military because I couldn't make it through boot camp without crying. I seriously thought about it though.
DH served his 4 active duty years to fulfill his GI Bill. He would have renewed actively if they weren't going to send him to Turkey alone (without his new wife and new daughter). He went reserve for the next 20 years.
If my daughter wants to join the armed forces, all the power to her.

No one that I know of served in my family. I did think about applying to West Point. My dad had a co-worker that was a retired officer from West Point that was willing to help me out with a reference. I didn't think I was smart enough to get in.

My husband retired after 20 years in the USAF! FLY BOYS!!!!!!!!!
My brother-in-law (DH's brother) retired from 20 years in the USAF.
My brother was in the Army.
My step dad retired after 30 years in the Army and then worked as a civilian at Ft. Knox for about 10 years after that. He was actually the dude in charge of building the tank statues at the main gate and one of the other gates to get on base.
My aunt was a Navy RN during WWII.
My grandfather was in the Navy but died when my mom was still a little girl.
I want my son to go into the service as well. Maybe to the Air Force Academy!

My dad was not in the service....an uncle on mom's side was with Patton....couple of step brothers were in Army.....I was your basic Vietnam protestor hippie who had a fairly decent draft number.....But let's not forget that General John Burgoyne lost the revolutionary war for the British and that is why we are free Americans today!....that's my family contribution.....
The girl I (was/am/not sure anymore) dating has a big military family: Dad in WWII, ex-husband in Naval Academy, son in Naval Academy, now a Marine Lt. on his 3rd tour of Iraq with 2 purple hearts and up for another medal, brother is some level of general and a lifer in the army.......
she's conservative....you know I'm liberal.......it's a little weird.......

Lemme see...
I have an uncle who served in WWII - became a prisoner of the British. (fought fo the Italians)
My dad was in the US army in 1942 (Only for 6 months), ironically at the same time as my uncle was in the Italian Army.
Both my cousins were in the Draft Army of the 50's. Another cousin was in the Guard with me in the 70's.
My grandfather served in the WWI Italian Army.
I served 28 years Active and Reserve.
Edited to add: Mrs Andy was in the Reserves as a Nurse - she made Captain.
