Does anyone know how they work? How long does it last? Does it wash off?

IF, and this is a big IF - use a good one. Clinique, Lancome, and Neutrogena are good. HOWEVER - you have to efoliate every single inch where you are going to put the astuff, you have to be really careful around your hands, ankles, elbows, knees (any place where the skin is a little more thick or rougher) you have to sit around naked for about 45 minutes after you apply it, and quite frankly I would wait at least two hours before puting on any clothing you like to keep clean, and, most importantly, you have to keep up on it every other day or so. And when it fades, it can fade streaky. That's why the exfoliation at the beginning as well; any patch of skin with more dead skin cells than another and it will streak.
I think it's a big pain in the rump;I used to use it on my face and just tan my body (I know that's stupid, I have since wised up!). If you just want more tan face/neckI would use bronzing powder.
Good luck if you decide to do it.

I tried one of the early ones. It made me orange and I smelled chemical-ish, even several baths later.
I didn't try one again, but I hear the new ones are much better.
P.S. It's more fun to use a cotton swab and draw funny designs on yourself. It lasts even longer than a temporary tattoo!

For a really even coating, just use this. No need to exfoliate either.
Use the masking tape to tape off any areas that you don't want tanned to give the apperance of 'tan lines'.
