I have the results now...
The race itself is a much faster course than the one I did 8 weeks earlier. Since this was a championship race, the field was quite competitive with the fastest time in the 64 minute range (Jon Browne, 4th in last year's Olympic marathon was supposed to run it this year but dropped out due to the flu...he ran this course last year in 63 mins!) It is a point-to-point course with a 250 foot net drop in elevation with most of the downhill at the 9-11 km mark, although there were a few rolling hills towards the finish. The weather was overcast and ideal for running, kinda cool for this time of year, at 57-60 degrees at the start.
Anyways the only problem I had was that I didn't have enough time to warm up properly...I found out that I didn't bring my 2 bucks for the bag check less than 15 minutes before the start so I panicked abit for like 5 minutes before the race volunteer graciously checked my bag in for free...by the time that was over I had 10 mins or less to warm up and ended up doing 1/2 a mile of brisk jogging before heading to the start. The result was a slow first couple of miles...however I did pick up the pace substantially after that and managed a strong negative split between the first and 2nd 10ks (41:21 and 39:58 ). My chip time was a 1:25:37 with a gun time of 1:25:55.
KM Splits (for the mathletes in the crowd)
1+2: 8:50
3: 4:12
4: 4:05
5: 4:02
6: 4:08
7: 4:05
8: 4:00
9: 4:01
10: 3:54 (1st 10k-41:21)
11: 4:31 (too long)
12: 3:18 (too short)
13: 4:12 (hill)
14: 3:46 (steep downhill)
15: 3:56
16: 4:03
17: 3:55
18: 4:21 (hill)
19: 4:04
20: 3:52 (2nd 10k: 39:58 )
21.1: 4:12 (3:50/km)
Average Pace: 6:32/mile or 4:03/km
Chip time: 1:25:37 (Gun time: 1:25:55)
Overall position: 63/3020
55/1342 males
5/64 in M2024 AG
Hardly much of an improvement but close to what I expected having just come down from a series of high mileage weeks with just a week to recover and mini-taper. My training paces during those weeks were well, slowed down. Unfortunately I'll probably won't be running another half until early next year (planning a couple more 10ks before the marathon)...my quest for sub 1:20 will most likely continue into 2006...if I ever get there Neutral
