Filled in a shift last night at the firehouse and it was a pretty quiet night for the most part. Around 800, we get a call for an infant with trouble breathing, while the paramedic called enroute and I was waiting an additional crew member, heard a radio message that the kid was turning blue. I jumped in the ambulance and took off for the house. I get in front of the paramedic (they are in there own trucks) and we haul some ass getting there. Get to the scene and I am expecting to do a scoop and run, but we get there to the house and we here a baby screaming his head off, music to our ears. Baby has had a bad cold for a few days and apparently some mucous (sp) get lodged in his throat. After a quick assesment of the baby, (lungs were clear, color was good, nice rapid heartbeat) we check with medical command (local ER) and the Doctor allows us to leave the scene without transport to the hospital.
If there is ever a time that I was glad to see a baby crying it was last night. Mom and Dad, and grandmom were very grateful, and baby Dillion fell asleep in my arms while we were checking him out.
A happy ending to what could have been a sad scenario.

About 10 or so yrs ago my youngest son, who wasn't even two at the time, somehow figured out how to get the money out of his piggy bank. I walked in his room since he'd been quiet for too long and he was starting to choke. Turns out he was eating pennies. We dialed 911 and the dispatcher talked us thru the procedure for a child who is choking. He fired two pennies, one right after the other, out across the room and started breathing again. It scared the hell out of us, thank God for that dispatcher. She did a helluva job.

That is a nice happy ending. Reminds you why you're out there, I guess, and reminds us how grateful we are for it.

Man that was a close call! Baby Carla's been having problems with choking because of some acid reflux. It's supposed to go away in month or so, but it freaks me out when she starts to choke. Luckily, she hasn't turned blue on any of these occasions.

jj had that brett when he was 6 weeks old
robin was holding him and he just stopped breathing
he spent 8 days in the NICU (jj and abby were in opposite ends of the NICU)
reflux is a very common cause for apenea and stuff...medicine really helps with that i would talk to your docs

Doc's got her on a special formula. They did a sleep test last week to see if she's got apnea. We should have some preliminary results on it soon. She hasn't been having as many episodes lately, so I'm hoping she's growing out of it.

fortunately they do grow out
but from what we were told babies digestive systems and respiratory systems take a little while to snyc up, when the body refluxes they shut their throats down and some times the brain "forgets" always a gentle nudge or something clears it up
also as soon as they are up (sitting, crawling, walking) more problem gets better

Parent must have thanked us a dozen times. Moments like that make me proud to serve my community.
