20.4 miles at 1:30 this afternoon. It was 46 like 40 at the start and 50 feels like 50 by the time I got back. I think I pushed it to far today. I went out without any planting and water and I didn't take any gel packs. I felt fine until about mile 15 and then I started falling apart. I ended up walking for about 15 minutes in the final 5 miles of my run.
As soon as I finish this second glass of water I am getting a beer.

You did 20 miles without any water or gels? I'd say you pushed it too far yeah.

It is possible to run 20 w/o gels and water...I usually do my long runs on empty unless it gets hot (I bring water)...you just have to gradually condition your body to do so...also it could be that you're running it too hard.

During the 70's I used to do some training runs with a girl (Adrienne Beames) who would not drink water or anything else for that matter on long training runs.
She claimed to be the first woman under 3 hours for the marathon 2.46 circa 1971. There were a lot of jealousies around at the time and this record has always been in doubt (another story)
What I do know for sure is that while attending one of your universities around 1978 she won a marathon 2.52 (is there a Orange Bowl Marathon?)
and ran the whole distance without having a single drop of water until she had finished.
Now I am not for one minute suggesting anyone here should do that. Under warm to hot conditions it would be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
Tim's suggestion is a good one. On training runs and within reason, you gradually condition your body to going without, the human body is great at adaption. Again this is part of training.
Of course you fully hydrate yourself on returning home.
Not too much beer Florida, (say's he without sin) it's a diuretic. At least four glasses of water to one glass of beer.

When I had a chance to go look at my splits I realized that my opening miles were to fast. I run on part of the marathon course so it makes it easy to gauge the distance in terms of accuracy. I was running 8:05 - 8:10 for at least 4-5 miles of my run. That is a little quick for my long runs.
I did wait until after 3 glasses of water and 1 glass of gatorade and a full dinner before I finally opened a beer though. I was actually <gasp> Not in the mood for a beer after that run.
