Samurai Movies Rock My Face Off

I watched the Samurai Fest on the Independent Film Channel this weekend hosted by Quentin Tarantino.

It freaking ruled. Samurai movies are way less cheesy than Kung Fu movies. The two I saw were Seven Samurai and Yojimbo(The Bodyguard).

Here is what is so cool. Seven Samurai has been remade several times. Most notably into The Magnificent Seven. And the Pixar movie Bugs Life used the exact same plot. Yojimbo had the same plot elements and characters found in the Clint Eastwood Westerns Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.

Akira Kurosawa is a genius. And Toshirô Mifune is a hella bad a$$.

Instead of cowboys with guns, they had Samurais with swords. It ruled.

I am SO going to see "Kill Bill".

...like Kurusawa I make mad films, 'kay I don't make films, but if I did they'd have a samurai."

Yup, Kurosawa rocks. A lot of Kurosawa's movies have influenced today's filmmakers and TV writers.

In the last year, I've seen Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress, The Seven Samurai and Roshomon. Good stuff, all.

I just an ad for Kill Bill. How does that fit in with Kurosawa?

Kill Bill is a spoof (a la Quentin Tarantino) on samurai and kung fu movies. Uma is wearing the same jump suit worn by Bruce Lee in Game of Death.

Kill Bill doesn't fit in with Kurosawa in the least. Tarantino is paying homage to the Kung Fu style action/samurai movies. Kill Bill: Volume 1 is almost all action, little plot or dialogue. Tarantino takes the violence to an extreme and makes it into it's own art form. Volume 2 will be more of a Tarantino style movie (dialogue)

I'm so dedicated to my marriage that I'll watch anything with M at all. I've gotten used to action flicks, and most of the time, they're pretty good. I've never liked these kinds of movies, though. All that violence! I also don't understand how you could get kicked and punched that many times and still be ready for more. When I just stub my toe I'm out of commission for the next 2 hours.

True. The Hidden Fortress was the inspiration for Star Wars.
