The Sahara Marathon on PBS - Thurs, August 19
The Sahara Marathon, run annually through some of the harshest desert in the world, was organized to draw attention to the plight of the Sahrawi people who were thrown out of their country when Morrocco annexed the country of Western Sahara following the exit of the Spanish. Runners from around the world convene at the camps where the 165,000 Sahwari live in inhospitable conditions and participate in the 26.2 mile race through the desert. This documentary highlights the rae and the people with excellent footage and interesting history. This documentary does what the organizers of the marathon hoped it would do - provide an outlet to turn the spotlight on this people and this little-known political tragedy.
The Sahara Marathon will be shown on Thursday, August 19 at 9PM on PBS (check local listings - part of the Wide Angle series)

I thought the presentation was interesting, although I don't know of any other marathon ran more for political reasons. I don't think I'll be running this one anytime soon. Nothing to do with the politics one way or the other. It just didn't look like anything I'm into. However, if I was younger or more into adventure racing I might consider it.

Do'h! I forgot!
I have considered running this one. It doesn't look that expensive and is the type of race I like.

Not here, and Chicago has TWO PBS stations. They were, as always, begging for money.
Interestig that, too, as today a former accountant with one of those stations pled guilty to embezzling funds (don't recall the exact amount, but it was in six figures) from the station.
