sat is way overhyped
it does not measure drive and determination

i truly think it is only a small part of the big picture

are they really preparing for taking the SAT's or are they preparing for "how to take standaradized tests" ? I talk to my teens (pre-SAT age too) about smart test-taking strategies, and they get some of those skills in school too. we have not discussed the SAT in particular. I'm sure these prep courses are along those lines. You really can't teach the content of the SAT, but you can teach the strategies for answering those kinds of questions.

the parents i've spoken with are "cramming" i.e. doing vocabulary and previewing math questions. some are putting two hours per weekend on this "drill" already.

my child would never/could never get into an Ivy League school. I am thinking the SAT is way over-hyped anymore by most colleges. are they even looking at it as a valid indication of intelligence and if not---why bother with the test at all?

My son would benefit from the test-taking courses as he bombs on all standardized testing he takes. he makes the honor roll but scores very low on PA standardized stuff. he is a lamb going to slaughter on the SAT.

thanks everyone.

I scored a 750 on the SAT, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from College. I never have done well on standardized test's, either.

The SAT's are way over hyped.

I played in a soccer tournament instead of taking my SATs...It didn't matter much cuz I didn't go to college until I was 21 (and you didn't have to take the test if you were 21 or over to get into school...bonus!)

I took the ACT not the SAT. However my classmates studied just same. One the day of the test I showed up late and intoxicated. However, I would not recommend it, it did earn me some free money into school. I scored a 26. Some of the "Smart" kids that studied bombed big time. Twisted Evil

me too....ACT, hungover and late.....can't believe they let me take it...if I remember right my verbal wasn't no good.

RR, don't worry too much about it. If he's in a college prep program at school, he's getting the vocab and math he needs. SAT doesn't measure other area's of intelligence. if you want to help him with test-taking skills, I'm sure there are some computer software programs that would work just fine. if he chokes on tests like that, maybe a program like that would help him practice. But I wouldn't make a big deal of it. and certainly wouldn't drill and cram, like those other parents who are trying to live vicariously through their kids. (they'll rebel against all that yuppie decadence and greed anyway)
