When I got to work yesterday afternoon at 2:30 and sat at my desk, I felt a pinch in the crook of my elbow on the right arm when I bent it on the arm of my chair. Noticed a welt about the size of a quarter and dismissed it as a mosquito bite -- I'm pretty sensitive to 'em so it's not unusual for a new bite to be that large on me. Didn't itch much, actually felt more like a splinter.
The area got larger and redder as the night progressed. I'm on pain medication for the jaw, so that probably went a long way toward masking the arm pain. Got home from work at 11:00, read on the computer for a few hours and went to bed at 2:30. Before retiring, I asked Adam to check out the area so he could help me compare it in the morning. If worse, I was going to go to a quick-care facility when it opened. He left the room for a few minutes (looking on the computer) and told me to get up, we're going to ER.
We have Brown Recluses in the basement and Widows and Recluses in the garage. I probably stirred up something while getting the grill out the garage yesterday. There are other insects and arachnids that create similar results, so there's no tellin'.
Hurray! Beatrice gets a shot of steroids in the hip and a mega-dose of Benadryl!
It looks a lot better today, redness and swelling reduced and I have a blister where the bugger bit me and a strawberry-red splotch about 4"x3". I'm on a course of steroids for a week. Could've been worse, especially if I'd dallied around more. I think the ER bill will hurt worse.

has the Surgeon General Warned you that you might be dangerous to your health?
seems like a lot going bad for you in a short time span. Hope it's nothing serious.

Well, POO.
I left work early last night after throwing up and becoming really disoriented with vertigo. Really "out of it." Thought it was a reaction to the steroid pack.
Awoke this morning with red streaks running up my arm toward my armpit. My arm is all sore and tingly and I still don't feel too swift. I called my doc's nurse and she advised me to come in and see the nurse practitioner. The bite's infected and the red area has grown to about 7"x5". I was given a 'script' for antibiotics and was instructed to go to "RediCare" tomorrow if the redness continues to spread.
I was told that there wasn't much more that could be done if it is a recluse bite -- just wait and see what fun stuff the necrosis does. Fortunately, I've not had any festering -- just a solid quarter-sized lump where the bite is.
Happy tenth anniversary to us.

Make sure you take the antibiotic. You've got some cellulitis going from that bite!

Much bettah now. I've eaten all my steroids and all that remains is a hellacious itch, more antibiotics, and a 6"x3"-sized "Indian Burn" (as my husband dubbed it) with a knotty centerpiece.
I'm thinkin' that, since at this point, I'm necrosis-free, it couldn't've been a Fiddler since I didn't get a festering wound -- unless my Irish/Lakota heritage out-meaned the venom. Black Widow is definitely not it since I didn't feel the bite, which is reported to be quite painful.
Whatever it was, much respect to Br'er Spidah and his/her ancestors , but as soon as I can figure out the best method, I'm gonna get all Silkwood up in a garage.
Disclaimer: I'm not the squeemish sort: I like snakes (have even had two close encounters with Copperheads, one of which resulted in Br'er CH striking the heel of my boot), lizards, worms, and insects...but have never had the love for arachnids. Not to say that I kill all of them on sight -- just the brownish ones I find in the house or the garage.

Grrrrr...Let that paragraph read (since the edit function poops on me):
