ok, you finally found something i can't frikkin stand. i've stepped on more than one barefoot in my time. while i won't be cruel* and pour salt on them, i sure as hell don't mind if my shodden foot crushes one. I never go out of my way to do so though.
(sorry but i don't think ANY living creature deserves torture)

are they toxic? in nature bright colors like that tend to be a warning sign that they are poisonus or taste nasty. I cab believe the latter option no problem.
