| Quote: | | The study's major conclusion: The runners experienced "about 25 percent less musculoskeletal pain" than the controls. |
| Quote: | | She goes on to say that obesity is a major culprit in the onset of arthritis, and that runners do themselves a lot of good simply by keeping the pounds off. Also, "Runners keep their muscles strong and well-balanced, which helps the joints." |
| Quote: | | This doesn't give you license to pound out long runs while swallowing a handful of ibuprofen. But regular, moderate, pain-free running? Get out there and enjoy it, no matter what your auntie says. |
I will admit I've had arthritis since I was a teenager. Once I started working out with weights and running, my hips, knees and ankles didn't hurt from the arthritis anymore, despite the abuse I took running.

Mine's too bad to run. SInce it's in my feet, and I have bunions and hammertoes and nerve damage from the surgery, it's hard enough to walk. So I swim and bike and skate when my feet aren't too tender to fit the boots. I try to stay as slender as possible to put less stress on my joints; when Larry had his hips replaced from severe degenerative osteo-arthritis the dr immediately told him to lose weight to help with the recovery and it worked. Staying in shape does help with arthritis to a large degree. Getting in the water helps me. Swimming is a great exercise, and a lot easier on my joints right now. If I went out for a run right now, I'd be in a bed for a day on anti-inflammatories and painkillers. I just swam 40 laps and I feel great!
I miss running so much. I really do.
