A NEW RUNNER'S FAQ
In this FAQ, you will find many answers to questions that you, as a new runner, may be wondering about. There may be research, threads already posted in here that explain the answer, or both answering each question. Feel free to start a new thread in the Starting Line forum to ask a question. Just Starting Up
You should start out simply doing what feels comfortable for you. The first day you start, you don't want to go so fast that you push yourself out of it! Don't worry the first few weeks about your pace, all you should focus on is being able to run for longer and longer times at a time. Follow the 10% rule - don't increase your mileage by more than 10% each week
If you have done absolutely no training before, this is a very good program to use - http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
Running Surfaces
General discussion on Running Surfaces - http://runningforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31376
You should try to run on dirt trails/grass, or a soft surface whenever you can. Whenever you run on a harder surface, it greatly increases your chance of injury, especially of the dreaded shin splints. Running on the road (asphalt) is ok, but avoid the sidewalk whenever possible - it is the last forgiving surface there is.
Dealing with Cramps
Great discussion on cramps - look especially at Cappy's post

I have just come across Reebok some great Reebok clothes.
they're from Run Easy a brilliant new inititiative from them where basically you don;t have to be making yourself sick, suffer knee/back pain...just to eb able to keep up with fitness fanatics.
Their whole prerogative is to run at the speed of chat so you run at your own speed rather than a speed set to you by other people.
It's a good idea to follow the run easy policy, teamed with a good pair of running shoes to build up fitness slowly so as not to injure yourselves...
I ahev many times

What is the brand of socks and shoes do you use while on a run? Is smart wool socks and mizuno an okay fit?

I have only just started running as a cardio exercise - I notice that most runners in my area run on the shoulder of the street instead of the sidewalk. is there any benefit (other than the obvious uneven sidewalks) to this?
