Posted: 10/05/06 - 08:37 Post subject: Runner's World :: Lance Armstrong vs the Marathon
Anybody else read this interview? 7-time TDF winner or not, he's got no respect for the distance or the sport. I'm not impressed. Here's some exerpts...
RW :: How's your health?
LA :: Running health is a little touch and go.
(let the excuses begin)
RW :: You looked pretty fit out there today. At one point, you were doing 6:30 or 6:45 pace.
LA :: I can run pretty fast if I want to.
(so a slow marathon means you just don't want to?)
RW :: Why New York as opposed to any other marathon?
LA :: ..from what I gather, the most special one.. the biggest party scene.
(sorry Lance, Boston is the most special... enjoy your partay)
RW :: Some people think given your aerobic capacity, you've got the ability to run 2:30 tomorrow.
LA :: Probably not tomorrow, but I think if I gave myself two or three months of serious training, I could do a 2:30. But why?
(why not? you're a freak of nature gifted aerobic athlete...the competitive fire is absolutely dead apparently)
RW :: You get asked about Ironman a lot, too. Whether you'll do one of those next.
LA :: Yeah. Every day. There's no way.
(weenie)
RW :: What's the longest long run you've done so far?
LA :: 10 or 11. We haven't done a big run. And we may not.... i'm not worried about it. Just go out and rip it. Walk the last half.
(can you say bonk?.... big time)
RW :: Do you eat while you're running? Although you're not really doing long runs.
LA :: Do people eat on long runs? Gels or food?
(earth to Lance, helllllo.)
RW :: Are you going to listen to music at all during the marathon?
LA :: I'm going to do a Nike-Plus setup.
RW :: What do you think about [Kristin Armstrong's] running?
LA :: It's great. We run together sometimes.... she runs to stay fit, and I think she finds a certain amount of therapy in running, which is good.
RW :: Do you feel that? Does running do that for you?
LA :: Not yet... I haven't learned yet to go out and just Zen out on a run. But I'd like to get there, for sure.
(for sure, dude.. fer...sure..)

| He prolly beats my time. That's why I'm not re-upping for RW. They have all these stories of people at death's door, and two months later they BQ in their first race ever. Too depressing and discouraging to read.

while I disagree between the NY and Boston thing....I'm with him, if I'm doing one for the scene and fun....NY all the way
I find his comment on Kristin appalling. At 3:34 marathon, she's hardly running to stay fit.....people run 15-20 miles a week for fitness....people maybe up that mileage to 25-30 to "do" a marathon. Kristin is training for a marathon ^^%%$$%$.
A 3:35 will be good for Lance, respect the distance, and respect you ex's efforts at the distance, dork.

he's always taken such a condescending attitude about her running thing. poor kristin, she's schlogging along and doing 3:30 marathons, but hey, it's good therapy for her
he truly had a DORK hat on for that interview.
just go out and rip it lance. rip it good.
gosh, i sound like a hater today.

Why is it a sin for him to just be running it to have fun?
So, he's gifted. He's also human.
He's ripped it up so many times in cycling... maybe it's just time to do something for him.
He doesn't owe a fast time to anyone. Not even himself.
Go Lance!

Run for fun in training, charity events, 5k-walk/jogs, but just my 2-cents, when you take center stage at one of the greatest races in the world and you have a 'gift', it's patronizing to give a poo-poo effort.

I wonder if he got the ‘Run for Therapy/Exercise’ comment comes straight from Kristin? Maybe he asked why she ran and she said ‘just for exercise’. I wouldn’t want to compete against an ex lke that, that’s for sure

Don't get me wrong. I think it would be great to have him go out and set a course record, but, he's not hurting anyone to just go out and run it for fun. I don't think that's patronizing at all.
I just think it's great that he's running that race. He has the opportunity to bring a lot of attention to the sport, running full boar, or just dogging it and having fun. Either way, it's a win for running as far as attention goes.
I don;t think it's fair to hold him to such a high standard because he's a gifted athlete. Everyone has their own agenda and their own goals. He's no different.

Another one of his comments in the interview was..
"Does Kristin still write for Runner's World?"
For cryin' out loud. She's a regular columnist for over a year now. You'd think since he was going to be on the cover he might have actually gone out and read the latest copy.

Like I said....
have 'fun' all he wants, but I personally draw the line at NYCM, Boston, Kona, Oly Trials and maybe a few other venues. There's 10,000 running races he could go out and "rip" it at. But if he wants to belittle pinnacle running events like NYCM, he loses face in my book.
If it was for 'fun', why not decline appearance fees and cover photos on RW? This has become "business" for Lance. And being business, he owes it to give it a real effort.
