For cryin' out loud. She's a regular columnist for over a year now. You'd think since he was going to be on the cover he might have actually gone out and read the latest copy.

yeah, thats just being ignorant... | Do you think he was just being a smartass? I can see him doing that. |

 | no, just judging by what I've seen of his personality.... he seems like a smartass.

So, he's gifted. He's also human.
He's ripped it up so many times in cycling... maybe it's just time to do something for him.
He doesn't owe a fast time to anyone. Not even himself.
Go Lance! |
to quote Steve Prefontaine...
"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift"
Run for fun in training, charity events, 5k-walk/jogs, but just my 2-cents, when you take center stage at one of the greatest races in the world and you have a 'gift', it's patronizing to give a poo-poo effort. |
So, because he's gifted, he doesn't get to have any fun?
Don't get me wrong. I think it would be great to have him go out and set a course record, but, he's not hurting anyone to just go out and run it for fun. I don't think that's patronizing at all.
I just think it's great that he's running that race. He has the opportunity to bring a lot of attention to the sport, running full boar, or just dogging it and having fun. Either way, it's a win for running as far as attention goes.
I don;t think it's fair to hold him to such a high standard because he's a gifted athlete. Everyone has their own agenda and their own goals. He's no different. |
while I agree, it does seem that he changed his tune a little bit since he first agreed to a marathon. I think he found the training hard and is now trying to make light of the fact that he is not ready. I think that is what is why his comments about Kristin are terrible. He could have been a stand-up guy and said "Kristin takes the marathon training serious..." Lance believes that he can just about walk the second half and beat her time and therefore does not give her credit for what she's accomplished. And that would be, earning a Boston spot, while mothering his 3 kids. And "if" he doesn't know what it took her to get there, then his ego is too big and he deserves a little "crash and burn". I think the former Mrs. Armstrong might be .

My thoughts are:
I'm not sure how to view lance after reading this article. Do you think he is seeking the media attention, or is this a guy who is tired of being hounded by the media? The comparison of him and Tergat was borderline ridiculous. Why?
I get the fact he'd like to let loose a little and take it easy after the years and years of intense training. Who could blame him? Maybe he signed up for the marathon right away while he's still in great shape and only had to put minimal effort into it. Is this a charity event for him in any way?
After reading the article, I don't know whether to sympathize with Lance or hope he falls on his face. The comment about his ex was pretty snarky. Oh does she still write for you? PU-LEEEZE!
Somebody's been "ripping it" with Matthew McConaDORK too much.

He talked about all the jet-setting he had to do for appearances and such. If it wasn't about attention, he'd retire and enjoy the good life. No, he's gotta make hay while the sun shines. He's a hot name right now. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his climb to fame and cancer fighting, but if it was all about the LA Foundation and not just himself, he'd talk about the Foundation more and not himself so awfully much. It's all about Lance.
| Quote: | | The comparison of him and Tergat was borderline ridiculous. Why? | I think it comes from the often compared feat of winning the TDF and being marathon world record material. The pundits like to say the TDF is equivalent to two weeks of world record marathon running. I doubt it. So much of cycling depends on equipment, team riders, strategy, etc, it's apples and oranges. Marathon running at Tergat pace is all out red-line racing, not much else in the equation. Personally, I don't think Lance has the fire to do a solo sport like marathoning at an elite level. He's become dependent on others for cycling and running too, look at his trainers and group runs and such. The 'posse' think is gaggy imho.

oh oh oh! my turn! *MY* turn!
...
...
ok, now for a few comments:
lance has nothing left to prove. if he wants to run for fun and help be a draw, then that's cool. he's allowed to show up and do whatever. i hope if he's paid to be there, that he'd have to try. he's an athlete, not a celebrity or president. and even then, i bet that if Tom Hanks was recruited to run, he'd do the best he could to do as well as he could. y'know? but if he was there just to cut the ribbon and party, then no biggie. i doubt we'd see him on RW, and he'd be praising ever athelete in the event.
i don't think it's cool that he's on the RW cover and he's not taking the race seriously. that doesn't warrant cover status. lots of people work a lot harder for the sport and probably aren't as capable as he is, and in that sense, i could see a lot of people being disrespected by him not putting in a full effort.
i would also assume the "does she still write for you?" being a smartass remark. i'll give the benefit on that one.
i also agree with the huge difference between the team sport of cycling, and the run-until-your-body-evaporates-and-you-save-the-world (flash reference, anyone? anyone?) red line running that a world record is set at.
anyway. more respect could be shown for the real competitors. i'm not sure what interview training he's had, but in hockey you always give props to the other team and everyone that's come out, and it's never about you.
prediction: the marathon will own lance, simply because he didn't give it the respect it deserves.
i'm on the fence, but not willing to get my undies in a bunch over this.

Maybe he's finally met his match at something and is setting everyone up for a less than stellar performance? Then, when he does an astounding time, he sits pretty.
Maybe it's actually intimidating him and he's acting cocky to cover it up. I see this behavior in young teenaged males all the time.

jrjo: how about the part where the writer says that Lance stood in out in the cold holding his kid when the gun went off????
the race was in Austin. I've run one cold race in 4 years of South TX. One was in January and was a 30K so it started early (I actually wore tights), the other was Austin Marathon in February lining up before the sun came out (it was probably about 40F...so a little nippy for Texans...but cold??? not even Kenyans would think so).

His big pre-marathon race was a 5km, yeah, fergot about that.
Will Ferrell is a helluva more serious marathoner than Lance.

We call him McConaGay...he's a media whore...if you want I can add you to the "mcconagay email of the day" where the inevitable daily picture of him found online is passed around for commentary. I have a warped boyfriend. But we're all a little sick of him being the star feature at sporting events lately. We're over you, dude. I digress
My cycling but non-running mom is all over this too. She's ready to watch him fall on his face and is pist he's not taking the marathon seriously. She gave me an earful on the phone the other day about it, she's got some heated opinions. I love my mom. Jrjo, you and my mom could have a lot of fun with this. She gets really worked up about stuff like this too. I guess she knows what it is to really work very hard to be a mediocre athlete, so she really has a distaste for someone who A) wastes his own talent and B) effectively mocks everyone else who puts in the time and training by not respecting the distance. He's here for the party? I'm sure NYCM is great fun as marathons go, but I can think of much better parties Lance...
She did ask me and I'll ask yall, is it on TV? Because she'd like to see his spontaneous combustion (or at least 3+ hour time) live in person...
Also: regarding the LA foundation...whats it doing lately? One big bracelet fundraiser...then? Lance was on "tour" with Bristol Myers Squibb promoting the use of clinical trials in cancer treatment (which, is also a great cause)...but that was not the LA foundation....just curious. You still see the yellow bracelets a lot (McConaGay?) but I haven't heard anything from the Foundation, but possibly because I haven't looked either.

Well, I was all set and interested in a serious article/interview with Lance and the mag is sitting on the bathroom counter next to the can (where I do my serious magazine reading), but now...eh. I dunno.
Lance, like any of us, has as much right to go out and just run a marathon for fun or for the experience and to be honest: New York is probably the best marathon to do so in. It's so big that you probably could get lost in it and enjoy it (well, I could, Lance not so much). New York has the history, but it's so big that there are two New York Marathons...the one you race and the one you run. The serious legend and the party.
I hope to run the party someday and I'll take it seriously.
