Posted: 01/14/05 - 11:11 Post subject: Runner's World: I'm a Runner
Ever catch this new segment on the last page of issues lately? The past few months, it's been pretty good; Michael Waltrip, James Carville, some 'actual' runners. Here's the complete January segment. Is it just me, or do you too spy some 'irregularities'.

I'M A RUNNER
Richard Hamilton, Pro Basketball Player, 26, Detroit
Interview by Charles Butler
Running helped a lot last year when we won the NBA Championship. With all the running I did I was able to still play at a high level so late in the season. Rather than getting slower I got faster. Most NBA players don't like to run, so they get fatigued and hit a wall.
______
I run to exhaustion. If it's my normal workout day with basketball drills, I'll wake up and run a mile. The days I don't do drills, I run two or three miles. But I don't just jog. It's an all-out sprint. The faster I get my heart rate up, the more I get out of it.
______
I can run a mile in under five minutes. Probably like 4:30.
______
In junior high I signed up for track, but my coach kept telling me, "Rip (his nickname), you don't have to come to practices or anything. We just need you to run in the meets." One time I was racing the mile, I assumed it was my last lap because my whole team and coach kept saying. "Rip, sprint!" But when I got to the end, the referee said, "Son, you got one more lap to go." I had no more gas in the engine. That was the first time I ever lost a race.
______
A lot of the times when I run I take my dogs. I've got two pit bulls. They have a lot of energy. I'll take them outside on a leash and they'll take off. I'll keep running until they stop. Then I know I've done enough.
______
One time I was running and these people cut in front of me with their car. They got out and said, "Oh, my! There's Rip." My dogs were barking, and I said, "Hold on, these dogs are no laughy-daff lick-you dogs." These people were like, "It's okay." So I signed my autograph, even though they messed up my run.
______
The reason I run is that it makes everything easy for me, especially when I get on the court. If I can condition myself without a basketball, then when I actually get on the court, it's fun.
______
I believe I'm the best-conditioned athlete in the NBA. Running is 50 percent of the reason, and 50 percent is the way I eat and take care of my body.
______
When I get on the treadmill, I'll start at 8 mph and run that for a minute. When my legs are loose, I put the speed and incline up and go hard for a mile or five minutes.
______
I'll probably run a marathon someday when I'm done playing. We used to do a Husky 5-K Run in college at Connecticut, and I would always come in first.
_____
Lots of times I can't find anybody to run with; it's tough for others to keep up. I'll stay with them early, but when I feel I'm not getting anything out of if, I'll go ahead and tell them to meet me at the supermarket.
______
Everybody on the Pistons always tells me, "Man, you run too much. Slow down. Stop."

I thought the same. Somehow RW decided to send me 3 free issues to try and get a subscription out of me and honestly the article about the guy who wants to run 300 miles did me in. Sent in my card yesterday.

The full interview doesn't put any better light on the guy.
If running at 8-mph for a minute and then harder for another five make you the best-conditioned in the NBA, then us riff-raffers should start practice dribbling and get to some tryouts!

Have you tried to play basketball? That sport requires waaaay too much coordination.

I like playing basketball. I can shoot the eyes out of the hoop with no one guarding me. Unfortunately that doesn't lead to much of a basketball career. Neither does my astounding vertical leap of about 9 inches. I can whup some butt in PIG though....

Have you ever known a collegiate basketball player? Like, really well?
It's like they're allergic to working out. 6 minutes of running a day just might make him the most prolific distance runner in the NBA.

All you short type people better grow about a foot as well. I'm one of the taller riff-raffers, but I'd be the shortest guy on most NBA rosters.

I'd be a 1-2 for sure (if I could run plays and shoot, that is...), and I get "jeez, you're tall" more often than I can care to admit.
