Posted: 04/15/03 - 19:09 Post subject: Runner X and Famous Runners
Nobody else in my real life really gives a rat's butt, but I figure that at least a few people here would think this was cool...
This past weekend I went to a running clinic put on by a local college. I got to meet Jeff Galloway, Bob Anderson, Chris Lear, Lisa Rainsberger, Adam Goucher, and Scott Larson. Very few people showed up, so I got to ask all of them a lot of questions. It also turned out to be a very casual and informal setting. All of them were extremely nice.
They had two different sessions with individual speakers, then a panel discussion at the end. It was so cool to see Galloway, Rainsberger, Goucher, and Larson talk about the current state of US running, doping, career ups and downs, pre race routines, etc. Jeff and Lisa represented two accomplished people from the last running generation and Scott and Adam spoke on behalf of the current one. It was probably the single most interesting running discussion I have ever heard.
(Kick/CoolRunning Note: During the panel discussion, JG talked about his Olympic experiences and career and not about Gallowalking.)
FYI - Chris Lear has a book coming out on June 1 about Alan Webb's first and only year of collegiate running. Chris ran a 4:09 mile and was an All American at Princeton. So, I think he is probably one of the best authors we could get to spend 4 months with Alan Webb and then publish a book about it. He would get really animated and excited when he talked about the book and Webb's future. So, I'm thinking it might turn out to be a good book. "Running with the Buffaloes" was his first book attempt, so this new book might be even better. I didn't get to read any of it, but he talked about it like someone who was really into the topic and not like someone just trying to sell books. Know what I mean? (No, I'm not his agent. I just thought I would share.)
For those keeping score at home:
Jeff Galloway - Coolrunning thread locker
Lisa Rainsberger - Last US woman to win Boston. 2x Chicago Marathon champ
Chris Lear - wrote Running with the Buffaloes and all american runner at Princeton
Scott Larson - 2001 US Marathon Champ
Adam Goucher - Former NCAA champ and US 5k Champ

Not the funny cows Scott Larson. It was the runs very fast Scott Larson. Although, that would have been a good question... "Do you think of those funny jokes for your cartoons during your long runs?"

Why is Galloway a "thread locker" over at CR?
I think the man is great, from what I've read. I wish I had his zest for life and his attitude. I think he rocks, personally!

His method of walking aka Gallowalking to finish marathons is at the heart of most of the CR battles which degrade into elites vs newbies, headphone usage, Brutal vs everyone else, and cotton vs coolmax debates. More than 3 Jeff Galloway references in a thread will cause at least 5 people to open a new thread announcing that "this will be my last post here". It gets crazy.

Scott Larson is a hottie!! I'm totally jealous......
That IS really cool!! I've met a lot of the Runners World editors before but never anyone of that caliber. (BTW, the RW folks are all nice too!)
Adam Goucher rocks, he's always been one of my heroes.
