Well here are my results:

Race Number: 1005
35 - 39 Age Group: 20/67
Overall: 95/ 418
Chip Time: 21:02

Watch Splits:
Mile 1: 6:25
Halfway: around 9:30
Mile 2: 6:51
Mile 3: 7:07
Finish: 21:04

What a cruddy race. I felt pretty good through the turn around and I don't know what happened. I was on pace and then I lost it all. I thought I would at least get near 20:30 if I didn't hit 20. It was raining a little bit but I guess the humidity was a lot worse than I thought or something because yet again after I hit that turnaround I just died. One of these races I will destroy this course. This course is used for several different 5K's so I know the course well but I just don't run it well.

I guess I will have to try again next year.

I understand how you feel, boiler. I had that same experience last year with 2 10ks. On the 1st 10k I was at 43:00 min. On the 2nd 10k which was 2 months later I aimed for a 40-41 min PR but ended up running worse than I expected (44:35) even though the course was mostly flat and was pretty disappointed with the results. Runners have their bad days just like most other people do so it's normal I guess. BTW 21 min for a 5k is not a bad time and you're in the top 22% overall. Well you have a whole year to work on it and maybe next time you will destroy this course!

is it the course that does you in? or was it some other factor?

you still did a great job, but I understand how you feel. I ran one like that last night. I'm now thinking I've got to keep going back to this race until I'm satisfied with my performance there.

Eric,

First off, nice run!

Secondly,
don't beat yourself up. You ran pretty decent splits the whole way. Don't let it get you down. I can honestly tell you that in nearly 4 years of running and racing, I have no idea when a breakthrough is coming, and I only hit my goal @ 50% of the time. It's alright, it's what keeps us running.

Suggestion
try and run @ 7 mins for the first mile. Hold yourself back. It will help. You will feel much better, and be able go for it at the end.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. On Saturday night I was really pi$$ed off / dissapointed that I didn't even get close to my time. Now that I have had time to reflect on it I did pretty well. I hit my goals of top 1/3 overall and top half of my age group. I will just have to find a different way to train for that race. The reason I thought I would nail it is taht in December I ran a 20:45 5K (but on a different course) and come to think of it I ran a pretty cruddy 5K (based on that December one also) that I chalked up to post marathon results.

I start my vacation on Wednesday of this week so that gives me almost 13 days off of running. When I get back I can start to get ready for the Tour De Pain. in August and 2 5K's in July.

I think you also did a splendid job, Eric and if anyone's to blame...it's me for not getting your riff raff shirt to you in time for the race (it would have easily cut off a minute or two)....

Oh, and for the record, I would do anything for a 21 minute 5K?! Neutral
