I can't run if I've eaten anything vaguely substantial within the past 2 hours. However....

If you run in the morning without eating something beforehand, you are essentially running after a 8-12 hour fast. Your muscle stores will probably hold about an hours worth of energy, so once you get past that point your body needs to start using other fuel. Fat doesn't metabolise quick enough because the process uses too much oxygen, so most of this energy will be generated by breaking down protein - hence why distance runners have trouble building and maintaining big muscles.

As a rower, I need all the muscle power I can get, so I never run in the mornings!
