Posted: 05/14/06 - 09:55 Post subject: Rules of the Road *Warning - Vent*
JU's thread gave me pause for thought, but I did not want to use her thread as a soap box.
I was reading the article and when I got to the speed of the bike etc... I came to the assumtion that this was probably one of those "crotch rocket" bikes. Most of us seasoned bikers have issues with the teen to thirty somethings that think laws of the road and speed limits don't apply to them. Most of em only take themselves out in a crash.. we refer to that as "Idiot Tax" or "Thinning the heard". It is very sad to hear that a family was so badly harmed due to stupidity.
JU, your brother was spared so that he could care for his family. He needs to keep that in mind.
It seems that in the last 20 or so years, respect for others on the road, speed limits, turn signals etc.. has gone out the window. I remember as a kid that folks woud wait and wave the other person thru an intersection, let the other person in when merging etc. There was respect for others and driving was something you earned...not a right.
I have almost been taken out quite a few times...once by an idiot towing a travel trailer without the required mirrors...and thus could not see me when she suddenly decided to come over into my lane. Most of the other times have been by kids or young adults yacking on their cell phones and not paying attention. Needless to say, I have made my opinion known to some of them in language their mother would not have approved of....for shock value. They might just remember it...for a while, but I doubt it because most of em look at me like "Who the f'k are you to tell me what to do?" There have been a couple who came close to being yanked out the drivers side window... Even the PoPo have told me how arogant most drivers are to them when they stop em for a violation..
I know I sound like some old fart thinking of the "Good Old Days", but I can't help but feel that as a society..when you loose respect for each other, we are headed down the garden path to the 3 horsemen of the pockyclipse...

Cycles are definitely harder to see (unless there are 2), and I think sound seems to work real well for me when I'm on the highway sharing with bikes. Unfornuately, I think we lose this great tool with radios, people yakking in the car, phones, etc.

We just had another one of the crotch rocket crowd take himself outta the picture yesterday - crossed the double yellow line (on a curve ) and ran head-on into an Explorer. Link
I see these yo-yos popping wheelies in rush hour traffic and wonder what the h*ll is going through their heads - I've owned bikes in the past and know the consequences of riding like an idiot.

No you're not being an "old fart". This is too common of a problem and its not restricted to any age group. You got younger drivers on adrenaline/testoterone and old geezers on drugs. Meanwhile, the super earner is talking on the cell phone about business (Who exactly are you talking to at 0630?)
I see people crossing three lanes of traffic, cutting people off, doing 75+ Mph etc etc. Then guess what ? In three miles they get off at the rest stop and manage to get there about 30 seconds ahead of me.
Yo Yos are everywhere. We must be alert to them. I'd like to think I have ingrained some sense into my kids by using examples of stupid drivers as lessons. Amazingly, they seem to think the same about some issues. (Like speeding up to get to a red light)

I seem to travel at times on the show off cyclist highway. I have called the PoPo twice on the idiots on the crotch rockets, doing wheelies, standing on their seats while doing 80 and zipping in and out of traffic on the interstate.
And in both cases, there is no license plate to id them with.

We all act irresponsibly at times I'm sure. But to endanger the lives of innocent people, especially children, is something I can't accept. Especially now. It's amazing how many lives can be affected in a split second.

I think people think road rules is just a show on MTV. They have forgotten common courtesy. They have forgotten it actually IS a violation to block an intersection. They have forgotten what turn signals are.

And in both cases, there is no license plate to id them with. | You can outlaw driving with no license.
You can outlaw working a phone in your car.
You can outlaw motorcyclists doing wheelies.
You can outlaw everything that's been posted in this thread and Deb's.
Unfortunately, when it comes to all the above, you can't outlaw someone for being stupid.

Yesterday traffic was particularly heavy. We come to an intersection that comes off the freeway. It used to be a three-way stop. Recently lights were installed. Our lane got the green. We begin our left turn. The biker in the lane to the right of us, (going straight into the same lane we're turning left onto) on red, proceeds to go through the intersection, flipping a car off (who had the green light) and chasing him down the road to argue with him.
WTH?
I think a wide cross-section of drivers have no manners anymore. We are so in a hurry and have to be first. We have to "get ours" before someone else "gets theirs".
I've been trying to teach our 15 y/o that it is just not worth it. Be a little late(or just leave earlier) . Let someone in in front of you. Allow merging. If peeps make a mistake on the road, don't chase them down like the dude did above.(even though he was clearly and completely in the wrong)
I've tried to explain that the more worked up he gets, the more dangerous he and his vehicle will become.
Who knows if he's listening.
West Germany had the best, most considerate drivers I've ever seen. No road rage. They merged one-to-one. Speed demons were given the left lane. Hardly ever hear horns honking. Never saw an argument or a bird being flipped.

These jackasses http://starboyz.com/ pull their stunts around here and practice on some of the back roads out where I live. A number of my friends have bikes and one of these days I will also - I do my best to keep an eye out for motorcycles.
Drivers in general are a lot less cognizant of wth they are doing anymore. Cell phones, increased traffic, always being in a hurry, there are a multitude of reasons but stupidity seems to reign supreme on our roads anymore.

I have really been trying to resist the urge to become one of those people. The only thing I hate is when people don't use blinkers!
Just this morning I was doing 70 in the middle lane of a highway and I got passed in stereo by cars and trucks doing about 75 - 80.
