Barkley, the 100lb Rottweiler, is coming for a two week trial on Sunday.

Barkley has been one of the laziest babies I've ever known. Spending his two weeks chasing Ms. Polly (my 30 lb. Dobermutt) will dramatically improve his cardio strength.

I have heard stories that Rottweilers can "turn" at a moments notice. I believe ANY dog can, especially if provoked. I don't think it's breed specific. I also know Rottweilers can be a very vicious animal, but only if raised that way.

What say you?

Honestly. The only experience I had with a Rottweiler is the one I used to dog sit for in HS. Csar was the best and loyal dog to his owners and owners period. It took months for that dog to let me take him on his walks. I had mornings where I skipped taking him altogether and left him in his run out back/inside the house. There were times where his growl at me told me not to get him until he could see me in the daylight.

Csar was overprotective of his house and his owners. Eventually, he was given away to another family. My neighbors didn't want to risk him turning on their young sons. He went to a home where the people did not have any kids and weren't planning on having them.

I guess what I'm saying is...even my old neighbors gave up their beloved Rottweiler because they were leary of what he might do. They were loving, caring and good dog owners. They didn't even want to take that risk. They had raised him from being a pup as well.

Personally, I'd be extremely cautious bringing a non-pup Rottweiler into my home unless I knew his owners and knew him from puppyhood. I've known a couple that were just what Barkley appears to be - big lazy babies. Also known a few who were just angry dogs.

I've only had experience with the angier, agressive, growling rotts...so i wouldn't want one in my house and might be one of the few breeds of dogs that i will refuse if Sandy wants to get in the future.

The only rotweiller that I ever encountered, met the business end of an Asics 2050, and lost.

I knew someone who had a Rottweiler that they couldn't control. It was aggressive to other dogs to the point that no one else would take their dogs to the dog park when this thing was out.

The owner never disciplined it either. I wouldn't be surprised if it went after a person some day.

Then again, I knew another one who was a big sweet baby. I guess you need to show them early on who's boss, which is what the first owner I mentioned did NOT do.

A friend of mine has a Dobie-Rott mix. Huge dog, extremely scary looking. But she is the absolute biggest wussie you've ever seen and a very sweet dog.

Most of the Rot's I've seen are great dogs, it does all count in the upbringing.
I had one in the neighborhood as a kid that i could stick my hand in it's mouth to pull out a ball or stick and never had blood drawn from it and this was only a casual aqqauintance at first. later due to the dog's and my freindly relationship i would house sit the dog. He was great.

i come across several in the Park too, most are great. now Chihuahuas on the other hand.
