As many as you can afford. I run 4 on the back and 2 or 3 on the front.

also consider some high intesity reflective tape for the frame for side viewing. there are lots of different colors so you can even make some artwork on the frame.

How bad is the traffic? I remember Ranger saying it's somewhat rural around there, no? Unless you've got to bike on no-shoulder roads or in real heavy traffic, just get out there and do it. My experience has being on a recumbent inherently gives people a reason to notice and gets you plenty of second glances. And once you've commuted a handful of times at the same time of day, many, many other commuters driving the same route will get accustomed to you being on the road and be more cautious. Of course you've got to look out for number one, but reality is, a recumbent is no less noticeable than an aero-barred road cyclist.

I'm seriously considering getting an extra wheelset with some hybrid or slick tires to go on my mtn bike when I get it this week and riding that to work a few times a week.

I added a front flashy thing...super bright white LED...and a rear flashy thing...red flashing LED's..

Two on front, two on rear and a orange flag on a fiberglass wip...

Get as many reflector, flags, vests. belts etc that you can get.

All I will say, is no matter how many of them you have and your bike could be one gigantic refletive recumbent, you'll still hear them say:

"Honest to God officer I didn't see them..."

Troof! When I hit the lady that pulled out in front of me, she told the police officer that she didn't see me.

The police officer looked at my in my bright yellow jacket and looked back at her and asked, "Really? You didn't see that?"
