A very good friend of mine and his family could use yours right now. You may have seen brief mention of this in my entry in the weekend post, but it's gotten way worse. A good friend of mine who is pretty much my adopted son, is a heroin addict. I honestly couldn't love this kid any more if he were flesh and blood, and he's had a hell of a time over the last month. He was clean about 5 months and relapsed a month ago, culminating in an arrest on my birthday last week for possession charges. He called me from the hospital on Wednesday to apologize for not calling on my BD, he was in jail. Told me what happened, said he was going to detox. They wouldn't take him so he went home. I spent all day Thursday at the house with them watching him suffer. It was horrible. Spent a lot of time talking to Mom and Dad about Naranon, which is like Alanon, for families of drug addicts. I've been going since last year because I have several addicted loved ones, one of which being my now ex-BF. Only a few of you heard that story but it's really not important.
Nick was 302'd this afternoon, which means involuntarily committed. He tried to hang himself and also got really violent at home and had to be physically removed from the house by the police. Apparently he went out and bought a rock last night (crack) and this is how a lot of them react when high. He's very very sick, he needs a lot of help and prayers right now. I talked to him a little while ago at the hospital while they were waiting to get him in and he is more depressed than I've ever seen him. That's part of the problem too, he's not taking meds now and he desperately needs them. PLEASE pray for him and his parents.....we really all do love this kid and he's the sweetest person ever when he's clean, but he desperately needs help and I am hoping, although not wholly optimistic, that this is the bottom which will help him clean up. I know through Naranon that there's nothing any of us CAN do right now but pray for him.....and yours always seem to work.
Thanks guys.

Wow I'm so sorry. Prayer and good thoughts out that way. How old is he and why wouldn't they take him at detox when he tried to get himself in there?

Thank you guys......what a night. Unbelievable. He's 21, to answer your question, Deb....and the reason they wouldn't take him in detox is because his insurance has him on a protocol list, which means they won't pay for any more treatment because he's walked out of too many rehabs and detoxes before this. It's only the last one that he stayed in for two months. His mom called me at about 7:00 tonight...the crisis center sent him home because he was high and said they wouldn't 302 him, despite his stepfather, the police who removed him from the house and he himself saying he wanted to hurt himself. I spent hours on the phone with them tonight trying to figure out what to do. He's scared crapless about going away, so I got him to verbally contract for safety for tonight and agree to have one of them sleep in his room, kind of an at home suicide watch. I think part of that was manipulation because he calmed down awful quickly when I told him I knew a judge that would issue a court order to commit him if we needed to go that route and that he'd go to the local hospital psych ward, which he's scared to death of. He may be 21 but he's about 14 emotionally, and really screwed up. He needs medication and we argued about that half the night too. I'm not sure what we're going to do at this point but all I can do right now is pray for guidance. I know from experience you can't make anyone do anything they don't want to, and my fear is that he's just not hit bottom yet. Until he does, there isn't much we can do. Please keep the good vibes coming.

So sorry Genie. I hope he gets committed. We couldn't do that for my BIL because he lived in MI and you can't commit involuntarily. My SIL pleaded with judge for jail time. A month in jail has kept my brother alcohol-free for decades.

I have too, Z.....and fought my own battle with the bottle, which at the moment I'm still winning. Deb, to be honest, I am scared sh*tless a lot of the time. He reminds me SOOO much of one of my young patients who ODd and died last year, also a heroin addict and very much the same personality as his. I don't know if I could go through that again and I pray I don't have to. He seems to be doing a little better today, but we've been through the relapse and feel guilty and beat ourselves up, swearing not to do it again thing before. He's called me a couple times for this or that, but I know him and it's really to make sure I'm still out here after all the crap he put us through this week. He sounds like he's got something up his sleeve as far as treatment, but I'm staying out of it, he already knows my opinion on what options would be good for him. I'm supposed to go down there tomorrow and help him fill out some insurance something or other but I didn't ask what for. I'm trying to be realistic and not get too excited that "this time is it."
One day at a time, as the program goes.....it's worked for me so far.
Thanks for your prayers and well wishes, I know they always help.

Many thanks for your thoughts and good wishes.....Nick was admitted to a psychiatric hospital yesterday evening after trying, for the second time in a week, to hurt himself. From what I can piece together, he went to try and get into a methadone maintenance program yesterday and they told him it'd be 7-14 days before they could get him admitted. I think what happened was a definite cry for help more than a serious attempt at suicide, because this time he was admitted as an emergency and the facility he's in will help him fill out all the necessary paperwork that the other places turned him away for not having.
I talked to his mom for a long time last night and I think it's the first night since last Wednesday that I actually slept. I am SO grateful he's safe and in a place where he can get the medication and therapy he needs. They were going up to see him today and I may go later this week if he's up for it. I told her that was completely up to him and that if he didn't want to see me there, I was perfectly OK with that. I have everyone I know-my Naranon home group, my church congregation and every friend I can think of praying for this kid.....and I firmly believe that it helps. Please keep the good vibes coming, he's still got a very long road ahead of him. Thank you all.....
