Posted: 06/07/05 - 11:12 Post subject: Ride across the country
http://tourforlife.org/
These guys are a part of a cycling club my mom belongs to. I don't have the full story, she forwarded me this email from someone else in the club...that and the blog are all I know, but the idea of it sounds really cool.
| Quote: | A year or so ago I posted my old ~1988 Centurion road bike on our web
classified for free to anyone wanting to start riding, have an old
beater to learn to work on or whatever. A guy (Greg Parkolab) ran
across it on a Google, we met and I gave him the bike. He had ridden
some MTB but not road. He's since ridden with our club on Sat's a fair
amount of times and quickly advanced to the 18-20 group. Earlier this
year I ran into him at the shop where he was getting some parts for a
newer, much better bike he recently bought - having given my old
Centurion to another budding roadie. Long story short, he and his
friend are doing a twosome cross-country ride to raise funds for
Leukemia research. He lost his younger brother several years ago due
to
Hodgkin's. So a little more than a year after starting to road ride
he's going from Maine to Washington on this charity ride (he was
already
athletic when he started to ride). Pretty cool I thought. Details of
the ride below.
"2 GUYS, 2 BIKES, 2 FIGHT CANCER"
The Tour For Life is a self-funded, cross country bicycle ride created
by Drew Ettinger and Greg Parkolab. The purpose of this 3 month, 4500
mile ride is three fold. The main goal is to raise funds for cancer
research. Additionally, this coast-to-coast ride is to honor the loved
ones we have lost to cancer (please see "Why We Ride" on the website),
and to inspire others to give their support to their preferred charity
or organization.
This is not a typical "Net Proceeds" event. Greg and Drew are
personally
funding all of the required gear and expenses (approx $5000 each). This
will ensure that 100% of your donation goes directly to the Leukemia
Society.
As they have challenged each other to complete the ride at minimal
expense, they will be carrying all of their gear on their bikes. They
will camp out "under the stars" on most nights, and rely on their
campfire cooking skills for most meals. You can see their progress on
the website on the "GPS Tracking" page, and they will also be
responding
to your posts in the "Comments" link on the "Home" page.
Please visit our website at www.tourforlife.org, regularly for updates,
photos, and communications from Greg and Drew as they make their way
across the USA!
How you can help:
Direct Donation to The Leukemia Society: Please visit our website at
www.tourforlife.org and click on "Donations". This will provide a link
to The Leukemia Society's secure donation site. 100% of your donation
goes directly to The Leukemia Society from this special donation site.
Moral Support: We invite you to post a comment or question in the
"Comments" area (see the link to "Comments" at the bottom of the "Home"
page). Drew and Greg are looking forward to hearing from everyone.
They
will respond as frequently as possible, so check back often for the
latest updates.
Supporting the riders: Many people have asked if they can also donate
directly to the riders to help offset the cost of the ride. As we did
not anticipate this very generous offer, the website does not have this
option. To support the riders, please e mail Lori Parkolab at
Tourforlife2005@yahoo.com for information and instructions.
Note: Any amount received that exceeds the actual amount required by
the
riders, will be donated directly to The Leukemia Society.
