Up at 545, and I'm feeling sick to my stomach. I figure it's because I needed food. I got a bagel and a coffee at Dunkin Donuts; on the road at 630 for an 800 start in Washington Crossing State Park (PA side) because I didn't preregister. I hadn't planned on this race; just picked it up because I wanted to not only do a race, but actually RACE one. As such, I anticipate much pain and hope for a PR because I've been on fire lately. I pick up the packet, full of goodies (tons of snacks, drinks, toothpaste dunno, T-shirt) and sat to wait. I realize I wasn't sick to my stomach because I was hungry, but because the headache I've been fighting for four days is now (lucky me) a full blown migraine. I throw up twice before the race, but because I'd paid my race fee, am too cheap to leave, and hoped my stomach was empty I stayed to race. Still thinking PR.

Sadly this was a headphones-friendly race and my MP3 wouldn't work. I guess it's still too full of moisture from Louisiana (it refused to work on the planes when I returned, too) due to a battery switch in the rain down there. So now I'm miserable: sick, already vomiting, and now I'm forced to hear my own breathing which is awful. cry

The race start is signaled by a man in colonial gear, including a wig, firing a very, very loud musket. Ow - the pain in my head is unbearable, and now this. The first two miles I'm praying I can just hold on. Mile 3 I threw up. Mile 4 I threw up ... though not really; now it's just dry heaves. Mile 5, more heaving. But my times are still holding strong, and I'm not drinking anything because I know it'll come back up. I figure it can't get worse; just gotta gut it out. Of course once you say that, it DOES get worse. Mile 6 I have a blinding, searing pain behind my eyes and I scream, grab my head, and fall to my knees. When I can see again, I pick myself up and keep going. The final .2 I'm just thinking please please please let me not puke or fall again. I don't, and overtake a few in the final 100 yards. I weave to and fro in the chute. A woman asks me if I'm OK, and then I lean over the tape heaving again. Which continued the whole ride home as well.

So running with a horrible migraine - not too much fun. I'm still sick as I write this. All I remember is pain, being sick, being sickened by my breathing, and being amazed that I was holding on and still running relatively fast. I kept hoping for a PR despite throwing up or falling along the course that followed the Delaware River. And I managed to do just that, at my 50th road race Cool , busting the one I reset in April by 85 seconds. Too bad I was so sick; the weather was great, the course was beautiful. A great day to run.

Time: 1:03:01. Splits: 9:58, 10:05, 10:15, 10:18, 10:19, 10:14, 1:52 (.2), 10:10 pace. All things considered, well run and even. Though way too much work for a PR. Confused

Toothpaste? Depends what you had on the bagel. Mr. Green

Terrific splits and results, despite not being at 100%. Congratulations on the PR!

Oooh look ... my own stalker! That race I fell after the finish line, so it doesn't count. So only 4. I have no grace whatsoever yet remember I was tripped, fell on a rock, and fell from pain in 3 (I don't think that last one counts - it was a reaction ), but one was legitimate where I tripped on nothing. I would kill for less drama, really I would. But as it finds me in life, it finds me in races. dunno
