Get it done now so you have the rest of the year to get better and start training again.

Thanks, Sierra...that makes me feel better. It wasn't like I was going to ask my friend Mae who also had it done to see what her scars looked like and everyone's tolerance level is different. She said the same thing as you...it was more important to get rid of the discomfort and she was willing to risk scarring for that. And I know, you're right about the "someone who'd care about that isn't worth it" thing but it's still scary...although I must admit, the prospect of looking like a teenager again (well, at least somewhere..hehe) is fun! And I think I can get away with only missing one or two classes the first week if I time it right.
I'll call the doc tomorrow and see if I can move the date up (GULP!!). I still have to get some pre-op testing done, this guy is really thorough, but hopefully there's still an opening in Feb.

Genie.. Glad to read about moving the date up. That'd be my vote.
With scaring, a couple ideas. We've used a product called Maderma and really good results. Also, my FIL has had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists and he was always faithful about keeping the incision moist until it was healed and amazingly the scars can barely be seen.
Keep us posted

Hey - I think getting it over with is a good idea. If you are worried about scarring (and I know we discussed this once before) there are some after surgeryproducts you caqn use. I am thinking on the most basic level of tea tree oil, a product called "scargo" (whiich works great, believe me - I used it on my elbow surgery scar) and there is another product http://www.clinicel.com/ that might be of some help.
Just a thought. I know that vitamin E oil was nixed as a solution; but there are some other alternatives.
You know how to get a hold of me if you want to talk (and yes, I have a new cell, same #).

God, this is a pain in the ass......I have been on the phone ALL day scheduling pre-op physicals, mammograms, consults, yeesh!!! It's not brain surgery, for crap's sake.....
This BETTER be worth it! Surgeon's scheduler was not in today so I can't actually talk to her about changing the date til tomorrow but all tests are now set up for Jan and early Feb. Yuck.

I guees my take on this is how vital is the Runner's World half to you if you only have 6 weeks to train for it if you opt for surgery in Feb.
Ask yourself this.
Will I be in the best position come RW to run my race based on my training?
Will I be happy with the results good or bad?
Am I ready willing and able to give it my best shot?
Are there other races that give me a chance to (A.) train the way I want to train, and run the way I know I can & (B.) still puts me on goal if I decide to run my 1st marathon.
My advice is to get the surgery, skip RW and focus all my time and energy on getting healed, and begin a program that gives you a chance to improve your running and prepare you for any fall races.
If you decide to run Madison, use it as a guage to see where you are fitness wise and make adjustments in your training goals.
Use the time (if you decide for surgery in Feb) to recover, and plan your racing that gives you what you want, and not what you hope for.
