free societies have people who can "think outside the box" without fear of reprisals from the government.
If people can think free in many aspects of their life, they surely can feel free to think freely in the lab or in the classroom.
I think a lot of it has to do also with the fact of where people's priorities are. In free societies, we do not so much fear the goverment so much that we can focus energy on pleasing the greater good, not the government.

Christa McAuliffe? Wasn't she the schoolteacher who was selected to go on the Challenger and died in the explosion? That neither makes her a martyr nor really contributing to science. It's tragic, but a martyr?
