I'm not excusing any type of misconduct... But I do not think the Geneva Rules apply to non-uniformed, armed combantants.
They are probably covered under the IRAQI FREEDOM Rules Of Engagement which specify what is and what isn't permissible.

We're bound by treaties and conventions not to do it. End of story.

And I for one am glad we are. Everytime something like Abu Ghraib or the shooting of an unarmed prisoner is defended, we sink closer to their level.

So why is the world so obsessed with beheadings? How is this so very different? The difference is that the people who are doing the beheadings are extremists… the people slaughtering Iraqis- torturing in prisons and shooting wounded prisoners- are "American Heroes". Congratulations, you must be so proud of yourselves today.

Yes, really, why IS the world obsessed with beheadings? Why it is wrong when the Americans do it, yet when an American journalist who probably didn't even have a gun, much less want to use it, is beheaded by a group of savages, that's OK?

Whatever, lady.....play the "victim of American animals" all you want, but your people are murderers too. (that was addressed to her, not you Go)

Historically, it was a much more humane way of putting someone to death than say drawing and quartering them. Today, a different story.

You know Genie,

The woman who's blog that quote came from is just who's hearts and minds were supposed to be winning. She abhors terrorism, is western-oriented and educated, liberal, feminist (funny how those are good traits in Iraq or Iran but not so much in the US for some folks), religiously moderate, and speaks english pretty well.

If we're losing her and her educated, urban pals, then were not doing a very good job no matter how many battles we 'win' on the ground, are we?!

This woman, just horrified over the "American animals" who are in their country murdering people, seems to forget that HER people are even sicker and more cruel than we are and is playing the total "boo hoo, poor us" role by making that inane comment about why the world is so obsessed with beheadings (beheadings, as you may recall, that HER people performed).

If she is truly educated, then she would realize that she is a better situation then under Sadaam. Which raises another point - How was a women educated under Sadaam's terrorist system? Wasn't that forbidden?

My question is; is this something that should be reported to the public? For what purpose? Should the tape just have been turned over to the military command under the premise that the incident would be investigated and the soldier prosecuted?

I understand that, but to act like WE are the only "animals" in this equation is ludicrous, in my opinion. I realize there are two camps here as to whether we should even be in Iraq or not, so perhaps that's why the difference in perspective, however I absolutely resent her comment, as if to say, why are we making such a big deal about beheadings? THAT was my point. It IS a big deal and for every criticism of us, I can think of two for them. Maybe not her and her friends specifically, but don't act like our people are the only "animals" here. I'm really not sure how to make my point any clearer and I don't think I need to repeat myself yet again.

well said rex...

but this brings me back to...are we better off if this just isn't reported, especially without all the facts being known, seems to me that it just inflames things more? just asking, not sure if this is what i truly believe in this case or not...it's a tough one to call...

Fine. NO I do NOT think this should have been reported, nor should any other individual acts be reported, at least not until they have been turned over to the military and investigated, because the propagandists will only use these types of tapes, as has apparently already been done, to foster their own agendas. If you want to talk about not sinking to their level, then how is this different than the Danny Perl tape or the tapes of other hostages begging to have their lives spared? In my mind, it's not--it's still being used as propaganda. Let the military deal with it.

Sonny, I don't know where to start on this one. Iraq under Saddam was nominally a socialist state. One of their big things was universal education. Iraq, pre-Gulf War, but with a strong legacy already in place, had the most westernized, educated population in the Middle East. Then again, so did Iran before the Revolution. Most Iranian progressives were very much against the Shah, but didn't want the Islamic State.

Likewise, Riverbend (blogger in question) was against Saddam but doesn't want American dominance or a theocracy in Iraq.
