Posted: 05/18/04 - 12:28 Post subject: Reflective paints? NOT PANTS.. updated
i am looking at painting a bike helmet. I came across a deal on a helmet but i normally get a white helmet and apply white reflective tape on the edges. This is a red and black helmet. I would like this white for, night skating and heat reflection. but would want to keep the lightweight and looks of it. any suggestions?
most of the stuff i seen paint-wise uses glass beads and is ULTRA EXPENSIVE

Rust-o-leum, in white.
So the helmet matches the wicker basket.

your right, cool site, nervous though on the paints since they are solvent based, solvents and styro-foam don't go to well together normally. i am wondering how well the powder might work if a shelac is used though. another thought process is all

*Sigh*. It sounds like you're totally discounting the smilie sticker. *sigh*. Ya try to help a guy out...
I'm not enough of a Science geek (although I'd love to be) to know what mixing those would do. Although, through unsupervised experimentation, I do know about solvents and styrofoam.

yeah most of my solvent/stryo-foam is unsupervised too. I am not dissing your smillee, i'd put it on the back of the helmet with the, "Have a nice day." slogan plus , "you just got passed!!!"

If you want, I can send you some EPS samples (the same stuff helmet foam is made out of). You can test paint it to see how it would react to the paint. We've got tons of the stuff in our warehouse.

well i went with the high intesity reflective tape, i should be real visable.
going to be a white helmet with the holes being lined in blue instead of green. i'd hate for them to see green and hit the gas pedal. hopefully blue is off the green hue enough not to confuse them.
i think the pattern, if it turns out right, will look really cool and bug-like.

well i gott wait for the tapes to get here, do the art-work, then non-flash pix will be possible. they say the refelctive response is 10x brighter than what is shined at it.

I'm finally reading this thread now that I realize you aren't talking about some disco-wear
I just wanted to be the stick in the mud who offered up that most helmet manufacturers void warantees of helmets that are painted because of basically what you stated above. I guess I'm saying is warantee or no, basically they don't trust the integrity of the helmit after you mix paint and plastic, so be careful! [/stick in the mud]
