The interesting thing about that map showing county wide votes across the nation is that Kerry took almost all of the population centers nationwide, even in otherwise very red states. Even in places like Idaho and the Dakotas, not to mention across the Deep South.

Outside of some rural counties with high Latino or American Indian populations, Bush took almost all of them.

Looking at vote by population density (avg. pop. per square mile):

Bush 61
Kerry 248

Why are more rural areas red and urban centers blue?

Cheryl,

I think there are alot of reasons and various factors why different groups vote different ways. If the Ds could figure out exactly why they'd be awfully psyched.

Rural areas just generally tend to be more conservative, more traditional. Not just in the US, but worldwide.

Urban areas are generally more cosmopolitan, more diverse, and more of a melting pot. They also tend to have more downtrodden people in them as well as vibrancy.

It would be pretty reasonable that urban would vote blue and rural red in general then, I think.

I disagree Sue - suburban would probably have a higher percentage of people with higher education. And I wouldn't say based on the red & blue that the 'burbs are falling under the urban blanket.

I'm not so sure I understand where you're going Sue. You may not have a higher degree, but with a college education you would fall into the "educated" category. I hardly think the vote is determined largely because of the number of higher degrees present in urban areas.

I think more uneducated live in the cities and are too lazy to do proper research. I bet if Bush ran as a democrat or changed parties to the democrat he would have won the cities.

in my experience the inner cities breed the dems good for you repubs bad

plus I think more educated people live outside of the cities.

I did plenty of research and I sure didn't come up with any reasons to vote for Bush.

They were discussing this exact issue on NPR today; wish I could have stayed in the car to listen to it, though the gist of it was what Rex said.
