So it really takes a little over 2 months to completely recover from a marathon? I've been running since the marathon (2, 3, 4 miles here and there), but over the past two weeks I feel like I have my pre-marathon legs again.

Why so long?

Anyway, it's good to be getting normal milege in. Mr. Green

So much for my running log though. I have not put any time into logging anything since January and I'll have to do some rough guesstimates to determine what I've done.

Did you get hurt in the 'thon? I speak from experience - that could add to recovery time.

That and age.

Didn't get hurt per se...but my knees sure were sore. I couldn't put any kind of milege in for several weeks that was "cake" to me prior. I'm figuring it was all due to having to recover.

My guess - and it's only a guess - is that you'd have to expect that after your first 'thon. It probably gets easier (less sore and faster rebound) with the more races you do. As I got hurt in my second, I can't say for sure (hence the guess) - this third one will tell me if I'm right.

I was out running again in a few days. It was a couple a month or so before I started feeling my old self again.

Considering the buildup to and the actual running of the marathon, your body takes a beating.

Good to see you out and about again

What sort of running did you do following the marathon? I ask because I'm thinking about Hal Higdon's post marathon recovery program.

I hate to say this...but I followed my own plan and just tried to get the milege in the best I could. I know I should have done more, but I had enough going on that I did what I could do.

It's all in the size of your base mileage for the 6-9 months prior to the marathon. The bigger the base, the quicker the comeback.

So, I probably needed to hit 45+ miles a week then? I was close to 45 mpw at the end with my scheduled long runs, but nothing consistant at that rate. More like the 30mpw range or so.

That probably is the reason.

I have to also say that my body was not conditioned for the streets at all. I'm sure I took a pounding in this sense and it went into shock as well. I know what I need to do differently to do better for the next one.
