Normally I would've gone with Cappy's reply but the fact that you went and checked with the motel manager, etc. and were able to verify she wasn't scamming you I must say a job well done.

Thanks all. I'm kind of embarassed after reading all of your input. I honestly wasn't trying to relate the story to pat my own back, although it reads that way now that I've gone back and re-read it.
It was a real splash of cold water in the face when I really started thinking about it, that's all.

I don't think so at all. You weren't bragging about how wonderful you were, you were telling a story about paying it forward, and those of us who know what you've been through can totally understand why you would be motivated to help someone else having a rough time. Don't feel badly about getting compliments--it reflects that people really do respect you for a good, honest, decent person who does things benevolently out of a desire to help others, not to earn praise.
