PostPosted: 04/25/05 - 18:32    Post subject: Real American Heroes
Today I had the pleasure of spending an entire day with some real heroes. Veterans from World War II, Korea, VietNam, and the Iraq War.

I was invited by my Aunt who works with Veterans, to accompany some Theatre veterans to Washington DC to visit the war memorials. This also gave me the opportunity to get some first hand accounts from men who were there. The veterans also were interested in meeting me, as my Aunt had told them of my interest in Military History.

I spent most of the day with two WWII navy veterans, who were more than happy to discuss there experiences with me. One of the veterans actually served under former President Ford, who was a Lt. in the Navy during WWII.

It was a great experience for me to meet actual combat veterans. Ordinary men, who did extraordinary things.

Perhaps the greatest reminder:

Do I need to change my line from "look at me" to "it's all about me!"

No offense Diva, but I wanted my first trip to the memorials to be spent with the men that were there. This is a trip that I have been meaning to make for awhile.

I may have missed something, Cappy. We were at the Wall in 1992 or '93. That "Freedom Is Never Free" inscription - is that part of the wall (and we just missed it), or is it somewhere else over there?

Freedom is not Free is part of the Korean War memorial, which is a very moving memorial

OK - we were there right after that one opened - LC's dad was in Korea - but I must've just missed that part. Remember spending a good time walking in and out of the soldier statues there.

I have some great pictures of the statues. That was a very well done memorial. From what I was told, each soildier represents a different country that fought in Korea
