When you race, which of the following is your biggest 'rival'. Any runner has to deal with all 3 on race day, but which one do you go after the hardest. You know- when you are training in the rain or getting up at 5 am. Which one of these is on your mind as you prepare for your next big race?

Mine is the clock. I am always having issues with the clock. It is a cold hard judge that is ruthless and relentless. At least though it is consistent and fair though Mr. Green

I think the other competitors is a better judge than clock, from race to race anyway. If I finish in top 15% with a really slow time, I at least know it's not a bad time.

Being the speed demon that I am Wink I race against the clock. Half of the other competitors are enjoying after race snacks or in their cars by the time I finish, and it seems so unfair to compete against old men on oxygen or 10 year olds.

For me, I would consider the clock and myself as almost the same.

Clock. My only competitor runs next to me, stride for stride, wrapped around my wrist.

I am usually racing the clock, especially for races that I have already run before. That means I have a previous time and I am always shooting to do better than the last time I did that race.

Next would be Other competitors, which is usually the guys I run with. There are a few of us that are all around the same pace that I am always trying to catch or beat.

Finally would be myself. I run so I can get away from my desk and I use the races as my motivation to get out everyday and run.

Depends on the race.

If it is a 5K, then I am racing the competitors and the clock.

If it is any farther up to a marathon, it is against the clock and myself.

If it is an ultra, I race against myself only.

self...

i can have a good race against the clock, but if i feel that i left a little on the course or tired a little faster and couldn't kick it in, i won't be satisfied because i know i can do better...and i'll beat myself up and question my dedication to training as well as my training plan over it...
