Down and Dirty
mile 1 7:48 hr171
mile 2 7:24 hr168
mile 3 7:27 hr169
mile 4 7:58 hr177
mile 5 8:02 hr169
mile 6 7:22 hr179
total 47:38 Avg 7:40 min per mile avg hr 177
goals, test knee out on hilly and hard paced 10k
my time goals, between 45-50 minutes.
Details,
Well this run was a test for me. to evaluate my knee for the possibilty to run the Atlanta Peachtree 10k. my last 10k liked to kill me, but i figured that after a week after a skating marathon might have been too soon to run it. So i have retrained myself in running, i have rehabbed my knees, weigh trained, iced my knee several times in the last week, sauna stretched twice in the last 48 hours in preperation for this race.
mile 1 7:48 hr171
Well had a first time occurance, we got to line, i was talking with another skater tha was running this as well. after 10 minutes on the road we hear the PA system announce we are facing the wrong way and that the crowd needs to move around to the other direction and turn around.
Great start So we get the direction corrected and we get started. Takes 15-20 seconds to get across the startline and i start the Garmin and HRM. "who in the hell put the Atlanta WALKING Club in the front i get stuck in a Goose "V" of these folks. the blue shirts of they are now dubbed by me. after another 20 feet i decide to slow, and lateral out to the sidewalk and bolt out. look at the new pace and runing a 7:04 , ok reel the frustration in. i run the first mile hopping curbs, running the curb, and dodging sidewalk trash cans. I find a spot on the road and claim it as mine.
mile 2 7:24 hr168
my racing style, i pick out a person ahead of me and "target" them. I like someone keeping a close pace to mine BUT further up the road. I see the "target". A guy in full black, long sleeves, tights and even in shoes. The 'NINJA" has been dubbed , target locked. "what is with the black? and his soles are red? Somehow he came to represent the evil things in the world and i must beat him. at 2.84 miles i feel the knee twinge. the quest for the NINJA must end and evil will run free as i remember the main focus is to see if all this "new" running will work for me. i remember to shorten my downhill strides. i decide to just run my race.
mile 3 7:27 hr169
Knee feels pretty good actually, the continual up and downhill gives my knee some breaks, i speed up the uphills to make up time i lose from having to slow down on the downhills. Uphills are my friends i pass people and make me feel great. i get passed on the downhills and must remember the "new" running. i pick targets and pass them, pick new targets along the way. i get to lap a blue shirt of
mile 4 7:58 hr177
more of the same of mile three, pick targets, pass targets, speed uphills and slow downhills. I notice though towards the end my pace is slowing but the pulse is rising, mental check of the legs, hmm feel heavy, less springs, pulse check is 188 slow down i tell myself. i take the pulse down to 160, let the legs flush out the lactic acid. GPS goes of and mile five.
mile 5 8:02 hr169
Never saw or heard a marker for mile five. thankfully the GPS was working fine. ( i love my toys, quiet RLAG ) i am still letting the legs rest for the moment. still slowing on the dowhills though. ok, enough of this i pick up the pace again. Hmmmm the legs AND knee are feeling good.
mile 6 7:22 hr179
takes us uphill, LONG uphill. Is that???? naw!!! IT IS!!!!! the NINJA. i shall bring in the evil NINJA. i push the pace harder, actually at one point the pace was sub-6. ( HOLY SH!T i put my skates on???) I passed the NINJA...i see a shadow still there......he's catching me......huh?..shorts and white legs?? it's not the NINJA, he has been vanquished. and the last bit is approahing. i look at the GPS and less than a half mile, my high school track event. kick in the afterburners to include the last DOWNHILL. woot woot, speed feels good. the finish line has a camera guy they say. there are 1..2..3..5..7 people in front of me? hell this wont do. speed up pass into the clear and solo photo moment remember to say cheese. yeah right. i hope i did not spray the lense as i passed i was huffing and pufing so hard, saliva spraying out.
i pass under the clock and stopped my gadgets, 47:38. beat my last 10k in october by five minutes. yup the hyper is officially HAPPYASHEL

Nice time for such a tough and hilly course and great job on the PR! Though I thought everyone should literally run over the walking club...

Looks like one hell of a kick at the end. Good job, and I do agree about the walking club. Sheesh, get in the back people.
