Yeah, another short distance PR by 2:45. I expected this, as my PR was soft, but man, what a difference a week makes. No portajohns at the beginning until 15 minutes before race time (though several of us ladies fashioned a human chain wall in the woods). 42 degrees, windy, and rain, rain, rain the whole time - I was soaked before the race began. Good cause - to assist women and children eliminate their dependency upon welfare and, in turn, lead independent lives. Interesting gift bag - T-shirt, hair brush, cool chrome pharmaceutical pen, Aveda shampoo, CD opener, Breathe Right strips sample, jar opener, and bag of individual SP15 packets.

The 5K run started first, then the 5K walk. Apparently there was only one master timer so we 10Kers had to wait until the 5K was over. Most runners were in the 5Ks, so I naively thought hey, I could get an age group. Then I said hey, I have a better chance of coming in last with this crowd. While waiting and shivering I decided to try a new strategy - fast tempo for the first 2 miles, slow it down for the next two, fast tempo for mile 5, balls out for the final 1.2. Mile 1 was good, then in mile 2 I felt yesterday's bike ride o' death pretty badly. I think at least a day's taper would've helped but I knew I would PR easily. Once I hit mile 4 I said do you want to work and hurt, or go easier and enjoy this lovely run in the pouring rain? I decided to have fun, and I did, even walked through 2 water stations (why miles 4 & 5 were off timewise). Though my shoes felt like cement blocks, I was soaked, and it was hard keeping my legs moving that last half mile or so because my quads seized up. Interesting twist: a guy I went to college with came in 5th and recognized me; his eyes nearly popped out of his head. Cool

Final: 1:04:26, 71/75 runners, 10:24 pace. Splits: 9:45, 10:25, 10:21, 10:33, 10:47, 12:35 (1.2).

Next up: Port to Fort, Baltimore, MD - GO TEAM ABBY!

Awesome Job and PR elkid!!!

What a great race and your splits look great!
You cranked it out in the rain, "cement block shoes", and everything!
I'm happy for you and how you did! Dancing Banana
