Isn't it the runner's responsibility to know the course he's running?

Yep. Granted, it can be tough in the late stages of a marathon when you can't always memorize every step of the path and you think you're following a lead vehicle, but if the course is marked and you veer off a very clearly marked blue path...

I think that's what's really being questioned. There was a blue line painted on the course, but some people said it was a dotted line, and was hard to see in sections.
And this did happen between 8 and 9kms, so it wasn't far in the race at all.
The affected runners that would have won were "compensated" undisclosed amounts of money - I'm sure that was to keep the press at bay and the elites coming back (hopefully).

Yes.
I have trouble remembering the turns for a 5K. I doubt I could remember than all for 26.2 mi.

But since these are the "elites", surely they have a greater responsibility to know what they are running.

tough to say... what do you do in golf if tiger turns around and starts hitting the ball backwards? it's not like the shot doesn't count...
either way, over 26 miles you gotta hope the path is really clearly marked.

Shenanigans at ING Ottawa Marathon.
http://www.cbc.ca/ottawa/story/ot-marathon20060529.html
| Quote: | | Marathon organizers said the confusion occurred when a group of high school students left their post at a barricade to talk to some friends at the next corner. While the volunteers were gone, a motorist moved the barricade. |

there is one big thing that these elite men aren't 'fessing up to. They had a pacer that DID NOT cut the course. I actually talked to the pacer at the airport and he said he did not know why they did not follow him. They were also NOT the lead pack, but after cutting the course found themselves in the lead----this should have clued them. At the elite meeting Manny said two things.......No Sidewalks or you are DQ'd and he said they could not talk to the pacer to tell him to slow down. From what I heard the "pack" lost sight of the pacer. Easily understood. The course had MANY turns. The blue line sucked...I'll give them that.
I think what these men have a complaint about is that they were not yanked off the course or told that they had DQ'd before running the whole way. These men were put up in hotels since Thursday, giving appearance fees, massages, meals, AND there was a COURSE TOUR for them (if they didn't take it--or their agents didn't go over it with them too bad.....I sat next to the Moroccan agent and he was taking notes at the meeting.......his two guys did not follow the pack of 12 either).
A sidenote regarding Elly Rono: He ran fox cities here last fall. he came for a course record ($10,000) and complained when he didn't get it. Blamed it on the marathon. He said he didn't know what pace he was running because the marathon didn't have someone shouting out time and pace time at each mile marker. Yes, that helps.....but no one did and I've run fox cities 3 times and they never do, so why can you complain about something not provided when it was never promised and no one else got it either.
They were compensated financially for a DQ.........I think they should have kept their mouths shut or 'fess up that screwed up. They "knew" they cut the course when they suddenly "caught" their paid pacer according to the pacer's own words to me. They just didn't know "how or why" they cut but they continued on anyway.

hmmm this is interesting. I think it's the marathon director's responsibilty to see that the course is marked. No Way could I memorize a course. But, then again, I'm not pro and never will be. I guess for that kind of money I could memorize it.

but, it was marked. Here's the problem and Elites "should" know this and it was said at the elite meeting. The blues were on the road. However, the blues lines are not the "fastest" route. In actuality, the average runner probably runs 26.5 miles. Elites run 26.2 by running tangents NOT following the blue line.
I seriously doubt the barricade story. The pacer was less than a minute in front of this group. So to believe the barricade story, the group had to lose sight of pacer and in that less than 60 seconds the kids left their station, some motorist got out of his car, moved a bunch of orange cones, got back in his car, and drive across the marathon course BEFORE a group of 12 Kenyans approach. This would be tough for a NASCAR pit crew.
wasn't there a movie called "Gone in 60 seconds?"
The pacer was from NC, so he no doubt knows Elly Rono. The pacer said when Elly suddenly made up 60 seconds in less than 1kilmeter, he turned to him and said "you cut the course somewhere, go back" Elly chose not to go back.
