Posted: 08/14/04 - 11:34 Post subject: Race Report :: YMCA Sprint Duathlon (now with pics)
The race was a 5K/20K/5K, my kind of distances! Cliff's Notes at bottom of post.
Got to the race site right on time. Picked up my goody bag, hit the restroom and did a quick warm. Race director lined us up and described the course (which I never understood, because I forget it all after the gun goes off). I only recognized one guy that I knew from a previous race would beat me hands down (heretofor known as GUY), everyone else was an unknown factor.
Gun goes off and I see GUY and one other guy shoot out into the lead. I hang with the 2nd group. No mile markers, but by 10 minutes into the race, I've got a solid grip on 3rd place overall. Managed to hang on to that position all the way to T1. First 5K in 20:15.
Got a little too excited in T1 and couldn't get my helmet buckled and then when I went to get on the bike, I dropped the chain. That cost me 2 positions. 1:30 for T1
Headed out on the bike and played a little catch up. There ended up being a group of 5 of us that stayed together the whole 20K. The whole way, we'd just pass and be passed, taking turns fighting for 3rd place. Bike was kinda hilly, but that's standard fare for GA. I forget just where I ended up in the pack when we hit T2, maybe 3rd or 4th. Couldn't find my rack space so again, that cost me a few seconds extra. Total bike + T2 time = 33:04. Probably 32 min on the bike for an avg. speed of 23.25 MPH.
Headed out to the 2nd run with a young guy and we hung together for a little bit, but he ended up fading. Once again, I had a good grip on 3rd place overall. Felt strong on this run, but not quite stong enough. I pushed a little too hard on the biggest hill and while I recovered at the top, the 4th place guy caught up with me. I hung with him the best I could, but on the last .5 mile or so, he pulled far enough away, that I couldn't muster the guts up to catch him. 20:06 for the 2nd 5K.
Crossed the finish line in 1:15:00 in 4th place overall, only 10 seconds out of 3rd place OA.
Final results were ::
1st place - 1:06:??
2nd place (GUY) - 1:10:45
3rd place - 1:14:50
4th place (ME) - 1:15:00
I managed to get 1st in my AG by almost 5 minutes!
While Sheldon may be disappointed by my less than spectacular 1:15:00 time, I'm pretty happy with it. Kinda tough run course pushed my times up. Crappy transitions on my part too.
Cliff's Notes :: 5K/20K/5K 20:15 / 32:00 (est.) / 20:06 + T1 & T2 for 1:15:00 - 4th place OA and first place AG

Niiiice. GUY didn't beat you by that much after all, especially with some bad transitions. Maybe next time you'll get him.

Great job.
Just wondering....when you have time to think about it. Or maybe Sheldon's comments (since you "think" he may be disappointed). What do you think you could have done differently? At first, I was compelled that you hammered too much on the bike and that might have cost you 3rd....but your second 5k was faster than than the first. Your transition time is awesome--eventhough you state some malfunctions.
23+ on the bike

I think I did pretty well on the first 5K. I still felt strong when it was over. Riding with the pack of 5 the whole distance probably helped bring up my speed. If I would have ridden alone, I probably wouldn't have pushed so hard. Not being able to find my spot in T2 probably cost me a few too many seconds. I really ran hard on the 2nd 5K too because I really, really wanted a 3rd place OA finish, I just couldn't hold off that one guy.
Maybe I need to add in more hard hill work because I seemed to really be sucking by the top of the hills.

Suweeettt!!!!!!
How on earth could I be upset with those times? I thought you would have a 19 minute first 5K and then faster transitions, but overall I don't think you could have done any better.
Not that on my best day I could run a sub 20 5k, but I know YOU can.
Totally awesome job...... I guess I really lit the fire under that tush and got ya thinking.
