Posted: 10/23/04 - 20:07 Post subject: Race Report :: Fall Chill Duathlon
My first time doing this race, but I did a tri last year that this same group put on. It's right on the NC/GA border and the race takes place in both states. Cliff's notes in bold.
I got to the race early and registered and then just kicked at the dust until the race was about to start, then I did a quick warm up. Weather was cloudy, windy and probably in the mid-50s.
I lined up near the front with one other guy I knew that's faster than me. Race director yells go and we're off. It's a 4 mile course through the state park. Short rolling hills and across the top of the dam and back. I heald on to 3rd for the first 3 or so miles then a young guy passed me and I let him set the pace. First 4 miles in 24:23. (6:06 pace).
In and out of T1. I managed to get back into 3rd place and I headed out for the bike. I haven't felt strong on the bike lately and it showed today. Less than 1 mi. into it and 1 guy passes me (he ended up winning). The course is on fairly hilly, rural roads, so traffic was pretty light. I headed into one intersection where a policeman was directing traffic and I see that a Suburban coming from my left is slowing and getting ready to stop and the policeman yells at me to "STOP!". I hit the brakes and another guy passes me on the bike. I didn't hang around to see why I was supposed to stop because I was a little ticked about losing a place (and there was no other traffic). Tried my best to catch the guy that passed me and almost did, but then I got stuck behind some cars in an intersection and the guy ahead of me hit the turn-around while I waited for traffic (only a few seconds). Coming out of the turn around, I almost had a run-in with a blue Metro. There was no traffic control at the turn-around. By that time, I'd been dropped. I pedaled back to the transition area and got passed by the same young guy from before. I couldn't catch him either. Pulled into T2 right behind young guy. 17 miles in 48:51 (20.88 MPH avg.)
In T2, I managed to get ahead of young guy. Being quick on the transitions pays off a little.
Out onto the 2nd run. A 2-mile out-and-back on the same course as before. I was doing my best to be fast, but I was tired. Those hills on the bike kicked my tail. About 1/4 mi. to the finish and I hear young guy kick it up a notch. He passed me and I tried my bestest to keep up, but couldn't. Finished the 2nd run in 13:04 (6:32 pace).
Ended up 6th overall and 1st in my AG. Finish time was 1:28:11 They posted the total standings at the end of the race and I managed 4th best run of the day for both run legs, but slipped a couple of notches and only managed 7th best bike split.
I learned a couple of things during this race. a) I've spent so much time on being a faster running that my bike is suffering. b) I probably have more in the tank than I think at the end of the race because I'm pretty confident that young guy and I were pushing a sub 6 min. pace for the last 1/4 mi.

Nice job, and an AG award to boot. I can't imagine after such a race having anything left in my tank, especially at your pace!

Great job on the race and the AG award
Perhaps a less aggressive start and race ran on negative splits would help you catch up with that young dude at the end

excellent job PH. that's some fast running! 4 miles in 24:23
great finish even though you had to STOP in the name of the law. i can't imagine me on a bike in traffic in a race. it would be a disaster.
way to go.

Good thing I didn't do that reace or I would have been in jail.
Really fast times John. Way to keep up the pace and smoke out the rast of the field.
1st in AG. That one goes on the wall.

"fall" and "chill" in a race name in the South? How is this possible?
Nice job. Since there was so little police support on the course to help you, you should've biked over that dude who asked you to stop.
