1st Annual PACE 5K - Sacramento, CA
Note: the PACE race series consists of 20 races across the country, from June 20 to November 20, to raise money for prostate cancer research. Dr. Ernie Bodai of Kaiser Hospital was the driving force behind Sacramento hosting this event (he was also the creator of the breast cancer postage stamp).
I'd been trying to decide all week whether to do this race, mainly due to our heat wave (hottest day of the year was Wednesday, at 106). Saturday was much cooler, so I decided to give it a shot. Sunday dawned cool and breezy, with overcast skies and temps in the 50s - perfect race conditions!
The course consisted of three 1-mile loops through downtown, beginning and ending at the west steps of the capitol (and, no, the Governator was not in attendance ).
A good turnout for an inaugural event, though the start was delayed while we waited for a light rail train to clear the course.
Unlike my last race, I felt strong all the way; in fact, I probably could have run this one harder. Still, I'm happy with the results:
9:14/8:58/8:44/:50 = 27:46 (New 5K PR!)

Negative splits in a race and a PR = most excellent!
